Hey guys, I've been reading posts on the forum for a while now, but I finally decided to sign up. I start my freshman in college this fall (2016) and I talked to an academic advisor about being a pre-med student, but majoring in English. She told me that I can't major in English and said that I should just major in Biology - Human and Health Science Concentration because an English major won't fit the prerequisites for medical school. I've heard that you are able to major in humanities and still be a pre-med student, but how I fit all the pre-med classes into an English major degree plan? I'm considering on just sucking it up and switching my major to Biology. My advisor also told me I can minor in English instead.

You should have plenty of electives and general Ed classes to take all your med school pre reqs. If you want to major in English, major in English.

Don't change your major, change your advisor, ASAP, because she'll destroy your medical career being as stupid as she is.

Adcoms don't care what you major or minor in, only that you do well.

You can easily fit in all pre-reqs (and then some) with your major's classes. Take a minor in Bio.

I was a religious studies major and actually thought it helped me through this process. It helped to distinguish me in that manner. I say go for it and it is absolutely possible to do if you want to.

Like most professional schools, students can come into med school from any school majoring in any field of study that leads to a bachelor's degree from an accredited post-secondary institution. If you want to study English you are free to do so - make sure you take all the appropriate pre-reqs, volunteer, shadow, research (if you want), keep a strong GPA and above all enjoy the college experience.

1. your advisor is clueless.
2. don't major in biology unless you really enjoy it.
3. keep in mind that only a small fraction of those who start as "pre-med" end up going to medical school. neither an English nor a biology major will help you get a well-paying job if the med school thing doesn't work out.
4. good luck.

An English major will help you more in medical school than a major in Pre-med. Just take the pre-requisites and make sure you still radiate like a cookie cutter pre-med and you will be fine. There may be places that will not like it, but you don't want to go there anyways.

You gotta squeeze in 4 chem classes w/ labs, 2 physics, 2 bios, and might as well take biochem and get a chem minor. Its not terrible to work with. You also have the option of doing a post-bacc after your english degree, but at the end of the day thats just more $$$

I'm an English major going through the current cycle and doing just fine. Stick with the English and just make sure you take the prereqs alongside it.

I'm a non science / liberal arts major also. You should be able to fit the minimum prerequisites in by the end of junior year. I just had to take organic chem 1 and 2 in summer school to finish on time.

Just make sure you get A's in the science classes you take. Since you're only taking 8-13 science classes 1 or 2 C's can ruin you. Can Bring your science gpa way down.

Do what you want, you can definitely fit all of your pre-reqs in. A good friend of mine majored in a liberal arts, the admissions advisor said it was great to major in what you want to explore, but don't forget about your passion for medicine. So maybe take a few more bio courses beyond the pre-med requirements to show while you want to follow your passions, you aren't afraid to explore a diversity of interests.
