Pre-med summer programs

Hello Everyone,

I've been looking for something to do the summer before my senior year of undergrad and I found some of the summer research programs that some DO and MD programs offer and they sound great; free room and board, tuition free credits, food allowance etc, etc. Of course when I hear anything that sounds this great I immediately assume it's eiter impossible to get into or I'm somehow getting screwed, what are your thoughts? Has anyone taken part in somthing like this? And all of the sites I found devoted to them seemed very ambiguous as to what the qualifications are, only that they want to see an "academic record" and "interest in science", which I think goes without saying if you're looking into medical school...so any ideas of what they specifically want?

I've just been looking around but the one at Ohio State College of Osteopathic Medicine looks pretty promising

Actually Ohio State has an MD school (OSU), whereas Ohio University has the DO school (OUCOM). Thus, I'm not really sure which one you're talking about.

Sorry, OUCOM but I'm just speaking in generalities. I want to know some overall experiences and general requirements to enter any of the programs

Hey,
While these programs are not always associated with medical schools (although some are) I would check out NSF funded REUs. I did one the summer after my Junior year in Idaho and it was awesome. Basically you work as a research assistant in the lab of a big research University. You get to run your own research project with the oversight of the PhD who runs the lab. You get room and board, travel to and from, funded activities and a stipend (>3,000$). Go to google and search REU; from there you can go to a search page of REUs and search by both discipline (Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience) and by location. I had a great time and everyone I have talked to has said the same. The deadlines for a lot of these programs are at the end of Febuarary or the beginning of March, so if you want to give this a shot I would look into it soon. Good luck!

sounds pretty awesome. i didnt do any research programs but i did partake in some great clinical ones; Project Healthcare (at Bellevue Hospital in NYC) and Summer Scientific Work Program (at Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream, NY). both were pretty memorable and great experiences. i miss the peeps that i interned with. :[

Could you tell me a little bit about project healthcare? i applied this year and i have my interview this weekend. its 5 hours long and I have NO idea what ill be doing during it or who ill be interviewing with. any idea? also, are there any qualities/abilities I should try to emphasize about myself?

I recommend everyone do REU programs! I did the one at Albany Med last summer and it was a really great experience.
