Just out of curiosity, ( and i'm writing a paper on the topic)

-How many of you premeds smoke pot?

-How often?

-How are classes going for those that do smoke.

-For those that no longer smoke, but used to, what difference have you noticed in your studies since stopping.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from some SDNers.

Smoking pot while your in school is just ******ed. Forget about the law against it, which is a ridiculous one... it's just not conducive to an effective study regimen. Maybe if you're a philosophy major, but in most cases, not the way to go for a pre-med.

Of course, the occasional puff puff pass at a Saturday night party wouldn't hurt, I suppose.

We should all at least experiment. When we do, we grow.

I doubt people are gonna admit to using an illegal substance on a semiprivate/semipublic premed forum...

Nope

Actually there were a lot of people saying exactly this in the "Who Drug Tests?" thread.

For the OP, I've never smoked pot either.

NEVER? How have you managed this? Better question, WHY have you managed this? I am so much more strongly effected by alcohol than marijuana. Looking back, if there is either I shouldn't have tried, it should have been alcohol.

I have not tried either and it is not that hard to abstain...

I have only done two drugs in college - alcohol and caffeine. 🙂

Caffeine is the greatest drug I've ever taken. A 12 step program has no effect on me!

It's not like the opportunity was never there, I just chose not to do it. My college roommate was a huge pothead and he would offer me some regularly, but I never did it because I had no interest.

I drink alcohol though, so it's not like I have zero vices

We should start a private premed forum, where we can be honest and open. I'm tired of this corporate (look above at the Interfolio, Princeton Review banners), AAMC and medical school influence on what is supposed to be a medium through which we can support one another.

God its as if everything that's terrible about the culture of medical education is present in the background of this website. It's time we stand up and admit our humanity, our vulnerability to one another. This is what the practice of medicine and the profession of medical doctor NEEDS so direly at this time. At least that's how I feel about it.

So sickening to me. So sickening. We're not politicians. We're people of medicine. Hippocrates used to taste his patients' PEE to evaluate their health. He had the balls to record it into text for eternity to know. We are afraid to even admit our own normal adolescent/young-adult experimentation on a forum that is supposed to be for us!

Ahh it makes me so mad.

I hear you brother, how ever if the president of our country can admit to doing coke once, I think people on here are same for anonymity is far greater here than on the presidential trail..

Unless you don't want it to be.
And I am actually writing a paper..
Much love brother/sister

I feel you. More aggravating, to me, is everything you talk about's pertinence to the application process, even more then SDN, at least as i see it ...

Yep. The reality is that there are a good number of pre-meds, med students and physicians who take pride in perpetuating this atmosphere of false perfection and lack of fallible humanity. Over time, they've done so much damage to the Art of medicine that I've come nearly to tears over it.

I've certainly had doctors who have a tough time with the word "I don't know."

I do it practically every day. Oh, and I'm going to Amsterdam for spring break.😀

But every once in a while, you run into one who says it freely when it's true... and it's like a breath of the freshest air EVER!

haha I love the honesty,

How did it impact your studies?
and other questions previously stated.

Any input would help out a ton!!

P.S. mad jealous about you going to Amsterdam!! ( needless to say the Netherlands have a ton of GORGEOUS woman as well as less restrictive laws!)
Have fun!

QFT. Thery're probably the ones who know the most, too ...

Just curious as to how one would site information gained from the responses on this site.

I go to class and study high all the time, I don't know why it impairs other people.

I believe this was still done in the 1900s to help determine which type of diabetes someone had. Diabetes inspidus means tasteless, then i think if the patient had diabetes melitus the pee would be sweet.

Yep. Makes sense. Tell me you got the more important point though, please?

I used to smoke frequently my sophomore year, and I found it affected my grades negatively. not so much because I became "dumber" or anything like that, but because I just wasn't as motivated and I was much lazier. I dont smoke at all now, and I feel much more productive. I wouldn't recommend it during the week if you are in difficult classes. Plus it made me gain weight b/c I was eating pizza at 3am all the time, haha - another big negative!

I've seen those sites and they don't last longer than a year. THAT'S why. Instead of arguing about this "aggravating" ordeal in which everyone is voicing their own opinion and it annoying you, why not try and make the site yourself? See how long you last when you don't have the blessing of "corporate sponsorship". This site has been hugely beneficial for the vast majority of users on this site and they shouldn't have to bend over backwards for some "idealists" who complain about something as insubstantial as their beliefs in regards to smoking pot while in medical school or college. If you don't like it, feel free to argue it. No one is going to stop you from creating the threads and making the posts, but don't expect everyone to voice the same opinion as yours.

Assuming that the people posting on here aren't being "honest" is just ridiculous in its own right. You're simply unwilling to believe that there are people who believe this and express this honestly because they're not in line with your way of thinking.🙄

i would love to comment OP but this is a public forum and you are talking about illegal substances, sorry🙁...

I've done it maybe six or seven times since I've been in college. I certainly wouldn't make a habit out of it, not even close, but I would agree that alcohol is by far more dangerous than marijuana.

^What he said

Hehehe. Totally.

LOL, I was already on board with you, I don't appreciate pussyfooting and cowering behind perceived political correctness either.

Anyway to answer the OP's question, I tried it a couple of times. It didn't really do much for me except make me really hungry and make things taste even more awesome than they already do. I try to watch my weight and what I eat, so those effects worked against my cause.

-How many of you premeds smoke pot?

Yo.

-How often?

Used to be fairly regularly (once to twice a week). Now I smoke very rarely - once every few months. It really depends on how busy I am and what I'm involved in at the time. I'll probably have to quit when med school rolls around, as I'd always be too afraid they'd randomly test me.

-How are classes going for those that do smoke.

I had a 4.0 during both years that I was smoking regularly. Not to say the marijuana led to that (lol), but it never affected me negatively.

-For those that no longer smoke, but used to, what difference have you noticed in your studies since stopping.

None, really. I never once smoked instead of studying and never once wrote a test while high or while suffering from the day-after effects. When exam period rolled around, I'd put away the bong until I was done. I just smoked as a social activity with friends when I had free time (along with drinking).

Hurray, quasi-anonymity!

I've never drunk alcohol, smoked marijuana or tobacco, or done any other recreational drug. And it wasn't hard, either. I like to have control over my mind and awareness and have my best wits about me.

You name the strain I have smoked it: white widow, AK47, every form of cali chronic. You know what the best part is? I have a 3.9 and got a 39T on the MCAT. Some of you are totally out of line by saying it's "detrimental to an effective study regimen." Honestly, I find it offensive when somebody else tells me what is detrimental to my future.. I'll be the judge of that one.

OP for the sake of your paper (I hope it's the cellulose clear papers or zig zags):

-How many of you premeds smoke pot?
I do

-How often?
Back when I was in school it was one a week (only on the weekends and on weekdays after midterms/finals).

-How are classes going for those that do smoke.
Final undergraduate GPA in an ENGINEERING major: 3.9

-For those that no longer smoke, but used to, what difference have you noticed in your studies since stopping.
It has made no difference. I only started smoking regularly junior year and it made no difference. I was scoring ~4.0 every quarter with or without pot.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from some SDNers.

Never done it in my whole life.

For you people who won't answer because "it's and public site, and that's an illegal substance."

....

You do know you are not going to do hard time. I have openly admitted to my friend's father, who is a Lt. on the his police force, I have smoked before (3 times total, when I was like 15.) Other than I guess Northwestern or JHU going out of there way to search the internet for any dirt on you to use in the application process...you have nothing to worry about.

Let me assure you, it's all true. Come up to westwood chiz2kul, I will not only smoke you out but I will give you a copy of my AMCAS. Honestly, I WANT to post in full honesty because not a day goes by that I wish there was no stigma attached to enjoying this beautiful plant.

Never smoked pot, figure thats one habit I really don't need.

Nothing wrong with drinking or smoking, as long as it's in moderation (once or twice a week). The people that wake & bake or start their weekend drinking on Thursday are losers, though.

Way to be humble...

Just a couple times a year at parties. My classes are going great, haven't had any slip ups (I'm a senior).

Weed doesn't **** you up even half as bad as alcohol does.

The stigma around cannabis use in this country is ridiculous. It is much much safer health wise than nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, prescription meds, and fast food imo.
