Is it wise to enroll at a pre-optometry program in university rather than enrolling in a BSc program? The University of Winnipeg, the university I am thinking of going for undergraduate, has the pre-optometry program. One advantage(I think) for registering for the pre-optometry program is that it lasts three years rather than the four years for the BSc program. Do optometry schools(particularly Waterloo) care if I do not have a BSc degree, but do have the optometry pre-requisites, to get in optometry school? Is a BSc degree required or is it recommended?

It doesn't really matter what program you're in as long as you complete the pre-reqs. A BSc is not required for Waterloo, but it won't hurt.

Well for waterloo they don't care if you have BSc or not. So many 2nd and 3rd years get in. (I know many, since I go to to UW). However, it seems like the US schools prefer BSc, as some schools have over 90% people with their degree.

the pre-opt program is simply an effective schedule to ensure all your optometry prerequisites are fulfilled within 3 years. you can go for a BSc degree and fulfill all the requirements as well. 🙂

Thanks for the replies. I think I will register for the pre-optometry program rather than BSc(Biology). After all, the pre-optometry program is three years. It saves time to go through this route.

Does anyone know if American Optometry Schools require students to have a BSc degree to get in?

they all require at least 3 years (90 credits). some require a degree. i depends on the school. good luck! 🙂

Although some will accept you with out a undergrad degree, pretty much everyone has one. Over 90% of my class has one. You also need to be a little more competitive without it.
