hey everyone!! im new here!
just wanted to say hi and i also have a few questions.

im currently a hs student about to go to college. i have a few questions about the pre-pharmacy track.

1) can you be another major besides chemistry if you want to apply to pharmacy school? i was thinking of doing biology. should i change my intended major to chemistry even if i prefer biology more? maybe biochem?

2) if pharmacy is 6 years (2+4), do you get your BS after your 2nd year or do you just matriculate to pharmacy school and get your pharmd?

thanks!

1) You can have any major that you'd like, as long as you complete all pre-pharm requirements for the school that you're applying to.

2) You go into pharmacy school and get your PharmD. The 2 years are just to get all the pre-reqs done.

Good Luck!

1) You can be any major you want as long as you complete your pre-reqs before matriculation into pharmacy school.

2) Most likely, you will not get your BS if you have only completed the pre-reqs for pharmacy school, and just receive a pharmD degree. My school has a 3 + 1 program that allows you to take 3 years of undergrad and go to pharm school for 1 year and you can get your BS degree that way, but in order to do that, you'd need to complete ALL core requirements + 90% of in-major courses. You should check with your school if they have a program like that, but if it's only 2 years of pre-reqs, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to come out with a BS even after 2 years of pharm school.

I don't know about you guys, but I did my pre-pharmacy requirements in two years and I gotta say that it's not that easy. My school required about 70 hours when you added it all up and that means you basically got to do summer school or have lots of AP credits.

So if you are in high school now, I would recommend you finding out what classes you need to take, so you can successfully finish all your classes within 2 years.

Hello and welcome! I've found this forum to be a great source of information and support and I'm sure you will too as you embark on your journey into pharmacy. 🙂

1) There are people here with all types of majors, biology, chemistry, biochemistry and probably even others. I think it's really up to you and what interests you most. All three of those would be good paths to go. I personally am going with biology just because it interests me more. I don't have to declare though until my junior year so am leaving my options open.

2) When I came here I was majorly stressed about "having to finish in 2 years", what I've realized is that it's ok to not do that and take longer. It's helped me chill out a lot. Basically the 2 years is prerequisites only, you won't get a BS with that. However there are people who do take 4 years to complete things and to feel ready and they can/do get a BS prior to pharm school. I know that there are some schools that offer a program that includes completing your BS while in pharm school, not sure which ones exactly. This is just my personal opinion but unless you are close to getting your BS anyway it doesn't seem that it would benefit you a whole lot to go through trying to complete your BS while in pharm school.

Most that pursue a degree before pharm school major in some sort of life science because the courses tend to overlap more with pharm pre-reqs than, say a liberal arts degree.

But as long as you get in the prepharm course work, you can major in anything you want. There is a girl in my class who has a degree in literature, for instance.

I'm a biochem major by the way and every single class for my pre-reqs except one has counted towards my major. so I would definitely suggest a life sciences. If you feel however, that you would like to major in something else that interests you (say business) then feel free to, but know that you might be taking a lot of extra classes that won't count towards your major.
