Hey guys/gals,
As I have had the chance to ruminate about this one for a few weeks now, I wanted to get some forum input. I think it's about time that there was a pre-PT forum as well as a PT student forum. We discuss, at length, about the process of getting into and preparing for PT school. That said, there seems to be a lack of talk about what goes on in school and what different ppl are learning as neophytes in the rehabilitation arena.
I read the forums of each health care profession on SDN and most tend to have a "pre-xyz" forum. It seems like a helpful delineation, and it should serve as a conduit through which we could bring to light the many aspects of what a PT does(trust me, too many ppl still do not know). The DPT students could talk in depth and with a great deal of specificity about their experience actually "in" school, which I think is a component that is lacking. Also those DPT students and practicing PTs could comment in the "PT forum" about the diverse profession that is PT and specific clinical, professional, and business advice.
Mini-Soap Box Time
One thing that I would like to promote on this forum and in "real life" is this notion of scholarship. It is an inevitable expectation for physicians(animal and ppl docs), DDS/DMD, and even PharmD yet we have a ways to go as the new generation of DPTs. The knowledge that we are and will continue to acquire should not be looked at as drudgery(check back with me at the end of Fall 201😉) or taken for granted! If we are to become true leaders, educators and advocators, then we MUST enlighten ppl about our scope of practice. This will hopefully open the door for future advancements in the field.
By separating the two forums, it would be my hope that when other ppl are perusing SDN that we could enlighten them on the actual practice of physical therapy. Moreover, we could provide a very clear picture of what PT is and isn't. How one creates a "pre-xyz" forum......IDK. Just some food for thought!
