Hi,

I just found this forum as I was researching about a medical career

I'm a computer engineer considering a move to medicine at age 32. I dont know if still have it in me to get back to studying full time.

I thought I'd go over the books for the various pre-reqs and see if I can handle them.

So, I was wondering if someone could point me to text books that are most often used by colleges to teach these courses:

Chemistry
Organic Chem
Biology
Math
English

I know the courses and books vary by college but a general idea should be OK for me.

Thanks in advance.

The material will be more or less the same for most colleges. If that's the route you'd like to start with, you can find a used bookstore or look online to get a used cheap book and check it against an somebody's posted syllabus.

Or - you could do what I did and start taking night classes while working during the day. It's been a slower process, but no bridges have been burned regardless of what happens. I started off with A&P to gauge my level of interest in the material and my ability to cope with a work/school balance.

I took biology at 2 different universities and my sister took it too, and we both used Campbell's biology book. I think they have a 9th edition, but get something early, like the 6th, it's about the same.

We used Tro for Chemistry, it was well-laid out and easy to read.

For physics we are using Cutnell and Johnson, I like that one too. I won't recommend my orgo book :/

For organic chem, pick-up the o-chem as a 2nd language books and read through those. Better than any o-chem book I've seen.

For biology, Campbell is the standard.

For g-chem and physics, I can't help you. I didn't like my books and haven't found any great ones for either.

For Biology, I second (or third) Campbell. It seems pretty much every university uses it, and it's pretty decent.

For math, if you're intending on taking anything from calculus I-III, I would recommend Calculus: Early Transcendentals (James Stewart). Anything before calculus I, I wouldn't know.

For general chemistry, the textbook by Raymond Chang is pretty good.

I've been to two universities in different states, 10 years apart, and both used Chang for G-Chem.

Chemistry the Central Science is a good book. I'm using 11e. The student's guide is available and sums up every chapter with problem walk-throughs, as well as an MCAT study guide. Highly recommended material for inorganic chem.

They also sell solutions to the end of chapter problems. I have all 3 books and feel incredibly well-prepared after having perused all 3 sources. I've read through the 10th edition and it was good, 11e is even better.

I used this textbook for inorganic chem as well. It's good and the MCAT supplemental guide is a nice touch, but I feel that it could be much better.
