I am very curious to know of those of you who have a non-science degree, how many pre-requisite courses you had completed prior to applying to dental school. I know pre-req courses vary from school to school, but for most schools you have to have completed AT LEAST 2 biologies, 2 physics, 2 gen chems and 2 organic chems. Thanks!

I was a business major and started taking prerequites for the purpose of applying to dental school. At the time of application, I had all my Biology, all my G-Chem, one semester of O-chem, and no physics.

At the end of this semester, I'll have O-chem, the 1st semester of physics, and anatomy done. The last semester before d-school start (Spring 2004) I'll finish physics, and also take biochem.

I was a medical Anthropology major, and If I get in this year Ill enter dental school with the following:

2 semesters Gchem
2 semesters Ochem
2 semesters Physics

and one semester of each:
general bio
general bio lab
molecular cell bio
physiology
physiology lab
histology
microbiology
human anatomy
graduate biochem

....I think thats it.

*edit* should have read the original post better, at the time of applying I am currently enrolled in biochem and have not yet taken micro.

Medical anthropology? What's that field?

this is the course description from the medical anthro class i took a few quarters back. I didn't like the class for some reaon. 😕

"Medical anthropology is organized around holistic exploration of ways in which health, illness, and medical practices are socially and culturally mediated. Topics include comparing illness experiences, understandings about health and illness, patterns of care seeking, therapeutic practices, and medical systems in context of different social and cultural settings, including our own."

Couldnt have said it better myself, and I LOVED the major.

do we have to take so many bio courses as mentioned by arns51... as most of schools ask for 2 sems in bio with lab.,.

i m also non-science bkgrnd.,., and have many more qs., so i will post another thread,.,

I'm sure there's some of you who are non-science majors who applied! Did you have all your pre-reqs done by application time? BTW, I'm not really interested in what Gavin has to say, but thanks aphistis.

A friend of mine has applied without having the second half of O Chem, or any Physics classes completed. Though, they do plan to have those courses completed before starting school. They did tell me I need to check with the individual school (just as a CYA reason), and to see what else (more course) they would want.

BTW, anyone know if taking some of these accelerated weekend science courses (Sat & Sun all day for like 8 weeks) is acceptable to dental schools. In addition, is it pretty doable to get a high grade in these courses? I am working full time, and am needing to get these courses done before taking the DAT and applying. In Cali, there is a place called New College of San Francisco, and also two places in LA (think at SMC and maybe West LA College or something like that). I have heard that some dental schools look down at these course, and kind of consider them a joke.

Any comments?

Thanks.

Your friend needn't worry about applying with pre-reqs missing. As long as he's done enough course work to do well on the DAT, and indicates he plans to finish them all prior to matriculating at dental school, s/he'll be just fine.

As for your situation, I don't see any reason your weekend courses wouldn't get the job done. The format of the classes is a little different, but as long as you get the material covered I see no reason why a school would object to doing it that way. Good luck!
