Hi everyone, I had planned to take a couple of pre reqs in the summer at my school and then go for a clinical co op in the fall after I take my MCAT in August/September. I was going to take biochem in the first summer semester and physics 2 in the second summer semester. The lab for biochem can be taken in a different semester where it is in person and I’m hoping the same can be done for physics 2 lab.

Should I still take these classes if my school just announced that all summer classes are being offered online only? What will led schools think? These are kind of the last classes I need before I can take the MCAT.

Check with the schools you intend to apply to. My state school is accepting online prerequisites and P/F grades only for classes taken in semesters disrupted by coronavirus.

I’m a sophomore so I don’t really have a set school list should I still ask some schools? Do I email them? Lol sorry for the questions

asking a school now is not going to give you a definitive answer. In 2-3 years we are not sure what the post-pandemic admissions landscape will look like. But thousands of applicants will have been forced to P/F by then. BTW, if you get the MSAR or look on school websites, they will tell you what the "normal" policy is. But we certainly aint in normal times.

I wonder if BC and AD will now come to mean "before Corona" and "after Disease"

****The Novel Corona Virus/COVID-19 & the Future for Premeds(Post Count #019)****

Because of COVID-19 and the very dynamic changes this will bring throughout society for the this year (and likely for the next 2-3 years if pandemics of the 20th century would indicate), questions will come up again and again about online prereqs, P/F courses, MCAT prep and testing, volunteering, shadowing, Physician LOR, lab requirements, etc. However, there is no definitive answer as no one knows which schools will act in which ways, nor how the upcoming cycle will happen. However, as medical schools are on the front lines of this both in treating patients as well as setting appropriate behavior for community public health, it would seems reasonable that most medical schools will take into consideration over the next few years at least. In this time of War, and make no mistake we are in a World War of Corona, we all must learn to live with uncertainty and ambiguity about the future.

I was thinking about getting a subscription for MSAR just haven’t pulled the trigger yet but thanks! I think I’m just going to take the lectures online because I have no choice if I plan on going on co-op thanks

Check for links to COVID19 FAQs on the admissions pages. As for the MSAR goes, no harm buying it now if you have an extra $30 but it probably won't be that helpful until you're preparing to apply.

I know that BC (as Goro said), there were some medical schools that did not accept online prerequisites. However, I'm sure that will change AD since there will now be a whole summer semester that will be forced to be online. I wouldn't worry about it, especially if these were courses that were previously offered in person.

The current situation due to COVID-19 crisis is NOT the normal situation. It is a good character quality to be be decisive and make the decision to take the courses you deem necessary. To help you with this, I would recommend writing (and storing away somewhere) a short paragraph about your reasoning for taking the particular courses.

The worst outcome would be that the medical schools require you to retake the courses (and probably get a similar or higher grade).

A joint release by California med schools giving their policy on this issue has been made public. I'ts quite likely that other med schools will follow similarly: COVID-19 induced P/F, P/NP UG Grading, Impacts on Future Applicants
