I might do an ASN (Associates Science of Nursing) degree at a local CC starting Jan. 2011 while finishing up a couple of classes I need for my B.S. this fall.

Since I will have a B.S., I will just do the ASN. I still need to take most of the med school pre-reqs, and I am wondering if any of you (Nursing Majors) or someone you know/knew took any of the pre-reqs while taking their nursing classes.

All Nursing Students in a program take the same classes per semester, so I am wondering if it can be possible to add a class or maybe two of the pre-reqs per semester? Has any of you done it? Anyone you know?

Thanks in advance.

Bio 1/2 and Chem 1/2 were pre-reqs required prior to entering my nursing program. Micro Bio, Medical Micro, Anatomy, Phys, Patho Phys and Psychology, Nutrition, and Statistics were also pre-reqs.

I was only able to take Phyics 1/2 and Orgo 1/2 after I graduated.

a degree in nursing requires quite a bit of clinical work. I was in clinicals every Tuesday/Thursday from 8-5 (sometimes 3-11) and had didactic courses (acute care, etc.) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 3 semesters. The last semester was strictly clinical work. I averaged about 45 hours a week in clinical following whatever shift my preceptor worked.

Keep in mind that an ASN will not significantly help your GPA because the clinical courses are P/F and are factored into GPA hours but not considered in GPA point calculations. The last semester of school was a 12 credit P/F class. I passed it, but its not the same as 12 hours worth of A credit. 👎

not all nursing students take the same classes together. they take all the CORE classes together. There were several students in my class who were taking other non core classes, like classes that were required by the institution for every major (global, cultural, social, etc...).

I was lucky and had all my university required courses complete before I started the nursing program....so once I was in, I only had to take core classes. I had friends taking stuff like religion, state governement, etc.

All you have to do is make sure the classes you want to take (and their labs) dont interfere with the core nursing classes. if you were taking everything at the same school, you wouldn't be able to register for two classes if they had a time conflict. just keep that in mind as your register. and keep in mind that clincals are flexible. some students are assigned to day shift. some students are assigned to night shift. some students have to do both shifts (switch halfway through).

I should also mention that English 1/2 were pre reqs for nursing....so out of all the pre reqs required for med school, the only ones that weren't required for nursing were physics 1/2 and orgo 1/2. this helped me considerably in terms of being able to complete pre reqs....

This program and I think most in California offer grade letters rather than P/F.

Thanks for your advise.

Anyone else has input?

Why would adding an extra class be a problem? At my school we just can't exceed 21 credits. I need to take my major requirements but I can take whatever else I want, whenever I want.
