Hey there,

I've been floating around the forums for a while now trying to find a thread similar to my problem but I couldn't find anything so I decided ask.

I was in the military not to long ago and took a few courses here and there but now that I am out, I want to go to med school. I'm not sure what courses to take. I can only go to Community college because according to the UC's I can't go in as a freshman if I have taken ANY college courses at all. (I'm from California).

Now from what I know taking pre-med courses at a community college is frowned upon at Med schools. So what classes should I be taking in order to get 60 sem credits to transfer? If I want to get a BS in 4 years I feel like it is impossible without take some science classes in order to take physics by junior year to take the MCAT.
Any advice would help thanks.

Hey buddy,

I was in the same (am in the same boat as you). Was medically retired from AD in 2007 because of some stuff that happened in the sandbox so I got to pursue my dream a little earlier than expected. I am going to San Diego City College and am in the midst of transfering to UC Berkeley for a BS or BA in Chemistry. I called a bunch of schools, talked to former ADCOMs, other physicians, etc and they said the prereqs can be taken at the CC level. There is a caveat, you still need to prove yourself at the Univ level as well, which you will do with a BS. You also prove yourself come MCAT time by smoking that. For a BS in chem I have to take gen. chem, org chem, physics, and calc just to go directly into the program...the only thing left is bio...I can't be blamed for just trying to get into my undergrad program; but my current 4.0 speaks for itself anyways. Study HARD!!!! You'll do fine.

There has been several threads about taking the prereqs at the CC level...I've subseqently been saying the same thing the whole day. But I am a pre-med guy and odds are everyone else that will be posting to you will be one as well. So essentially take everything in with a grain of salt and do some research yourself just to make sure you are not getting any bad info; and then post whatever you find out back here.

Thanks for the info. Are you trying to do the IGETC classes? Seems like most of the classes on there are pre-med courses so its hard to get around it. Only thing I can think of without taking them would be electives and math courses which seems like a waste of time.

Good luck to you and I'll let post any new info I get from counselors and such.

yep, i'm doing IGETC...and then going to assist.org to see what my major's prereq's are...i recommend that site (it's what your counselors use)...i haven't found a reason that you need to be wasting your time...

So are you just taking gen ed stuff right now or some stuff for your major also?

all at the same time...I mean the prereqs for my major (things that need to be done before berkeley so I can get acceptance into my major instead of screwing around)
