pre-requ classes are only valid 5 years?

I just heard that pre-req classes are only valid 5 years...

Does this apply to only science class requirements like chem, physics, math? or it apply to all the pre-req classes like Humanites classes?

Please let me know guys...

it depends on the school. Schools like UCSF don't care how long ago you've completed a pre-req. other schools have a limit of 5-9 years. you have to check with your schools. they might make you take it over or another course similiar to it. others will let you off the hook if you've been working in an area related to science if your science pre-req is old.

U.F. also does not have an expiration date on pre-reqs. I took Bio I 7 years ago so I was worried at first, but they said it was okay. I'm sure some schools do have a 5 year limit though, so it varies.

If the school has an expiration date on pre-reqs, I believe that includes all pre-reqs not just sciences and math courses. But I would call the school just to be sure.

I know that there really isn't any "shelf life" for pre-pharmacy coursework at Midwestern. I was told that it is "preferred" that the science courses were taken within the last 5 years. Other schools like U of Mich are a little more strict, I was told that some of my coursework was "vintage" and needed to be repeated. So as you can see it is different at different schools. I would suggest calling your prospective schools to ask a member of the admissions staff.

Hm, this could suck for me, because by time I apply to pharm school, some of my reqs will be 6 years old.

Honestly, it depends on the school, and you'll have to contact each individually to see what they require. As people have stated in this thread, UCSF doesn't have a policy regarding this. For the other schools I either applied or was considering, UOP requires retaking of organic chem and 1st year bio if it's been more than 7 years (though for bio you can substitute anatomy or physiology, or retake 1st year bio). UCSD has a strict 10 year policy for all science and math classes, which is why I didn't bother applying. If I remember correctly, Hawaii-Hilo and Touro-California didn't have a policy either, and Creighton had a 5-7 year policy.

It was 12-15 years since I had first taken these classes, and I just retook all the classes I got C's and D's in myself. Luckily I got A's and B's which helped me get the interview for UCSF. 🙂
