Pre-residency fellowships

I was wondering if anyone had any info about the difficulty of obtaining a pre-residency fellowship in ocular pathology or glaucoma? Is a research background a requirement?

dr. mamalis at the university of utah moran eye center takes a couple students each year as pre-residency ocular path fellows. i don't think previous research is necessary, but i'm not sure about any of the details. i don't think it is especially difficult to secure.
