Hey guys, I was wondering if this is a good idea or not. I usually struggle with chemistry and have to take it with a lab next semmester (fall). You all think it would be worth it to get the book ahead of time and look it over over the summer and try to teach some of it to myself so I have a bit of a head start? Or getting help from somone prior to the year starting? Just thought it was a decent idea. Thanks!

Chris

You won't really know what is expected of you and you will forget/ misinterpret things and end up confusing yourself.

I disagree. Start now and save your butt later. You can ace the first couple of tests this way and relax later on.

Sleep and eat fatty goods. It's what summer is for.

I thought about it, then I decided hell no! In my spare time this summer I plan to teach myself Spanish instead, I think that will benefit me in the future

You should check to see if a professor is teaching chemistry during the summer, then sit in on lectures with their approval. It may be more time, but probably more worth it because you will see what the school focuses on in their courses. Usually our professors did not care what happened, but then again I went to a large school with large chemistry classes.

agreed. But ask around and see if you can get the actual class notes from someone who's already taken it. Then you can use the book as a supplement to the things that aren't clear.

Personally, I think you should just relax, enjoy summers while you have em. If you've got the initiative to study over the summer, you should have no problem doing daily reviewing of the material during the semester, which will be much more useful IMHO. Just spend 15-30 minutes every night just LOOKING at it. You'll be amazed how much everything falls into place from just re-reading things.

I think studying in advance can be a great help, it worked wonders for me in second semester ochem. If you're unsure what to study, you can always email your professor

I've done this and it helped a little. If you'll be really busy, don't give up your little free time over the summer to pre-study, but if you aren't working or studying full time, it's worth a few hours as week.
