I am looking into doing a pre-vet summer program next year. I've already found Vetward bound at Michigan State University and there is also a program at UC Davis and Purdue. First I was wondering if anyone has done one of these programs in the past and if they thought it was helpful? Was is super competitive to get into? Also, does anyone know of other summer programs like this? I found a animal behavior research program at Indiana University that I am also interested in. Thanks.

I think Tufts has some kind of summer program as well. don't know anything about it though.

I did the Tufts AVM program. They have separate ones for high schoolers and college students, and I did it in high school and thought it was really great. We shadowed vets in different areas of the hospital for a few days (wildlife clinic, oncology specialist, SA Internal Medicine....ANYONE we wanted), learned how veterinarians do research, what they research, etc., learned what vet classes are like and we dissected a few animals. It was a 2 week long program, and they admit you based on your grades and I *think* an essay, but it was so long ago I could be wrong. I got in on my first try, but there were people there, out of the 40 of us (I did it 8 years ago so they could let in more/less people now), that applied 2 or 3 times before they got in. I really liked the Tufts one and would def. recommend it.

UPENN just added a summer program too. I really want to go, but neither I nor my parents can afford the extra $900+ for that. The programs seem like a great experience especially if you're unsure about being a vet or not.

I saw the program at Tufts when I was searching. The program for college students is only one week long. Still seems like a good opportunity though. Thanks.

What happens during these programs? And do you get anything out of it besides the "experience"? Not trying to be a bummer, but $1000 for a week or two program seems a lot..especially if it's just stuff you can learn by shadowing a local vet.
