Saw the movie yesterday. Very good, but the reason why I bring it up here is it very nicely shows someone with a cluster B disorder (the mother), an environment that would likely cause someone to have borderline PD, and it shows someone who uses dissociation as a defense mechanism.

The borderline PD in the mother presented in a sophisticated manner, clearly showing several immature defense mechanisms, a need for love, and several distortions of reality.

Some other mental health aspects
  • problems with the welfare system
  • limitations of what the state can provide
  • the revolving door system with welfare
  • sexual abuse
  • obesity in people of lower SES classes

I had many of the same reactions. I've treated many patients with profound similarities to Precious, her mother, and her father.... 🙁

okay, I'm considering seeing it. What the was the comment about the father? Does he has a personality problem too?

Well, he has sex with his daughter, so...yeah. And I think he first attempted it when she was about 3, according to the book.

Thank you. I guess I have to see the movie to find out. There are different reasons someone might do something as extreme as that.

Wow, now I really want to read the book and see the movie. It sounds so tragic but I love it when books and movies resonate with real life.

(Edit: Obviously from my forum name, I also enjoy ludicrous escapist fiction. 😉 )
