so every "are my stats competetive" post gets the " go to predents.com for your answer" boot without even being read.

to show why predents.com is the most unreliable source ever, just a quick glance will show you that the stats of almost every school on there are bascially identical.

if you want to look at the numbers more, you'll see that half of the boston university class of 115 spots apparently has a predents profile (56 accepted). those 56 accepted had a 3.5X GPA. Overall GPA of that class was 3.23 according to Boston's submission to ADEA. That would mean the remaining half who didnt report had an average GPA of 3.0. HMMMMM.

even if the stat of 3.23 was for the previous class, stats would still be the same if looking at the 2008 profile.

So, no more "go to predents.com, closing thread" responses.

That's my rant for the night.

EDIT:: well i guess not all who are accepted attend.

Ummm...when you say not all, you mean 8 out of 56. That's only 8...so I don't know what you are arguing.

As far as I know, ADEA reports the average GPA of Attending students. So although the GPA for accepted students is high according to predents, not all of them are going to attend the school. The ones with the high GPA usually end up going to go to another school (usually because of lower tuition etc). They use Boston as a safety school. The ones that are going to stay at the Boston are the ones with the Low GPA who have little option of choosing schools. When all the high GPAs go somewhere else, that brings down the GPA of attending schools. Notice on predents that you won't see all those accepted students on the attending list.

and why would you think 5 people replying to a "are my scores competitive?" is more reliable than the 50 who responded on predents.com.
Ofcourse predents.com is not reliable.
But how do you expect people who havnt even been accepted to reply?
We are all going through the same process.

And frankly speaking, those "are my scores competitive" posts get pretty redundant.
In the end, the basic rule is: maintain a HIGH GPA and a HIGH DAT.
If not, Yes, you may be a little screwed and getting the sympathy of SDN members is not going to help.

There goes my contribution 🙂

Those posts are most annoying when people, who have seemingly not done their research, start them. Once you've done your research (through other SDN threads, predents.com, ADEA book, school websites, admissions advisors, actual dental students, etc etc) and you still feel like you need peer advice (ie through other SDN members), that's when it seems most fitting to start one of those threads.

But like the above poster, icedspice, said, we are all going through the same process. So how can we give you the advice you need, when we are not even 100% sure of the answer ourselves. Sure, we can give you an example of how our friend’s cousin’s best friend’s girlfriend also had a GPA below 3.0 and got accepted into dental school. But how does that help you? Everyone has a different application. Maybe she had a high DAT, some research, waitlisted and got in very late by luck, who knows!

No one has a perfect application. But that’s when it is your responsibility to find the necessary statistics, sit down with an adviser (someone who is probably more knowledgeable about applying to graduate schools than most people are on SDN) and really look at your chances then. Maybe you need more experience in the dental profession, or need to retake the DAT, or simply take more science classes, all these things an adviser can reliably discuss with you.

Or maybe we all just need to relax? Haha…good luck everyone with your apps and interviews! J

not that i care, but i find it ironic that these "i hate 'what are my chances' threads" keep coming up almost just as frequent.

i know i'm guilty of starting one last year (or year before - cant remember) ...but i think its one of those things that you'll be tired of looking at...then you'll get accepted...and then you'll never look at them again.

and yet, i find it also ironic that i am responding to this thread KNOWING that one will show up next cycle. fml. lol

like i said, the only ones who annoy me are the ones who seem like they have done zero research before asking some of their questions...
