I was just wondering if anyone had any predictions of average GPA and DAT for the current 2008-2009 cycle based on other peoples post, personal scores, and other references. Please let me know im just wondering because most of the post I have seen on here seem very high with Academic Averages around 25-26. Thanks to everyone in advance.

AA averages of 25-26 are very very hard to get. I would guess as in the past couple of years, the DAT averages will be around 19-20 and the GPA averages around 3.5 or maybe a little bit higher. I sure do not see a DAT average jump of 5-6 points this cycle.

I can recall two people so far who have legitimately reported AAs of 25-26 so far... as Sugar NaCl said, they're rare.

However, other people have noted that people this year have been scoring higher than they've seen in past years (which I think is consistent with expected trends), so the competition will definitely be a little more fierce this year...

An AA of 25 was a 100 percentile score 3 years ago (and likely before that). For the previous year and likely the current, an AA of 25-26 is not registered at the 100th percentile. You can infer a level of competitiveness from that in any way you see fit. Scoring that high is possible, requires a lot of preparation, a bit of luck, and is also far from the norm.

According to the ADEA guide to dental schools. Last cycle, the DAT scores were averaging around 18-19 for most schools. Some had touched 20's like Harvard and Columbia. There is not going to suddenly be a 3-4pt jump in DAT averages over 1 yr. SDN represents only a small fraction of total applicants. People who score 25-26AA is phenomenal, and will probably be the "max" in the range of DAT scores for there particular class or schoo.

ps. I suggest people check the ADEA guide (for students entering 09), b/c it puts alot of myths to rest that were flying around last cycle.

Also remember, for every 22-25 AA there is probably a 17-19 AA, they just don't go around posting it on here. It'll probably average around a 19-20 AA though.

True. I am sure there are many test takers who score 17-19 AA and they don't post scores on this forum!

this is what I see:

GPA: ~3.4

DAT: ~19.3

Can anyone explain why there is some discrepancy in percentiles?
According to that table, AA of 22 should be 99.2% which is very different from the actual percentile that people get on their score report.

I don't think the percentiles have anything to do with # of questions answered correctly on the test......ie 85/90 on PAT is such and such...............the percentiles only compare you to other people that took the same version of the DAT. Ex: a 25AA might be 99% one time....and 95% on another maybey.

That makes sense. 👍

no actually your explanation is a lie. hehe.

so basically in your original score report, you get what has been the "average" over the years for the DAT. This chart is available on the ADA website (it says predicted percentiles or something like that..)

HOwever, if u wait till the end of the year the ADA will post a frequency table for that specific year. This compares you to students that took the test in the same year as you did and some what more accurate because it'll be the same test as you took...

hope that helps.

No way the avg moved above a 20 in this year alone.

As stated alot of people only post if they scored well and I think alot of people post fake scores.

I do remember seeing someone post up a 27 with a screen shot of the score report which would be the solo 27ist....pretty insane.

MDDANG and CALGUITAR have the top scores this cycle as reported on SDN.

Unless you count the bogus bootleggers who post fake crap.

Question. If the scores are supposed to be higher than it has ever been, wouldn't a 22 be scored at a lower percentage this year than all the scores in years past?

Not necessarily. More people are taking the test so a higher amount will have a 22, but still being the same % of test takers receiving those scores.

The only place one is likely to find mean DAT scores of 24-25 would be in adcom heaven. On this planet, it might be possible if there were 1,621,389 +/-1 applicants taking the DAT.

my $0.02

i think the % change (increase) in ave. gpa > % increase of ave. DAT. but thats just based on anectodal evidence.

hm, maybe you're right 😉

Since we pre-dents tend to be egomaniacs most of the scores are, how do I say, elaborated a bit. So going by these is not accurate. The best indicator will be last years statistics for each individual school.
