Ok, I apologize for "seeking medicial advice" here in a previous post. I will pose a question about how pregnancy works. Here is my question:

I have heard in a couple of places that pregnancy can happen anytime. I was just wondering how that happens about a week after ovulation, when the egg is dead and gone. Are my assumptions about ovulation and pregnancy flawed? Thank you.

The only constant is that the period follows ovulation by 14 days - you can ovulate early or late.

Thanks for the response. I guess my real question is that, after ovulation, am I correct to say the egg is alive for about 24 hours, and if it is, how is it that women can get pregnant 3-4 days after ovulation, when the egg is gone? Thanks.

How sure are you on the ovulation date? Test kits, body temp, etc aren't necessarily 100%. And when was the last time there was sperm BEFORE ovulation? They might sit around for a while as well.
*edit: I didn't see your previous post, but like tiredmom says, you can't be sure of ovulation date if you're going by last menstrual period date alone*

for a thorough explanation of ovulation please see "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Wechlser or check out http://www.tcoyf.com and their message boards, those women know ovulation and every possible way to get pregnant!

Of course you can't get pregnant if there is no egg! The point is there is no way to know when the egg is present. An egg comes consistently 12-14 days before menstruation and so you can only confirm it in retrospect. However, sometimes women have anovulatory bleeding.
