Hey everyone,
I got accepted to Optometry school, starting this fall. I'm 30 years old and been married for almost 6 years. I recently had a miscarriage which really affected my husband and I. We really want to have a baby.
So I am wondering if it will be a good idea to try and get pregnant while I am in optometry school? Do you know anyone with the same situation? Any advice?

Well, first off, congratulations on your acceptance. I am also a non-traditional student, and was accepted at age 32. The first year was the hardest to me, but now I'm halfway done and going strong.
I can say for certain, that having a child while in optometry school is not ideal. That being said, I am a father of two young girls, 3 yr old, and 9 month old. The 9 month old was born the summer after my first year in optometry school. Now, as a guy, I didn't have to carry the child for 9 months and then give birth and have to recover from that experience! But it was still hard on me, those long nights. Thankfully, my wife was fantastic and did most of the hard work so I could study and get the good grades. It's still a juggling act. Being a parent really divides your attention, and there's the constant nagging sensation that you should be home with your familly when you're on campus late practicing in the labs for a practical. It's tough, really tough.
One of my female professors had her first child during second year of optometry school. She was also an older, non traditional student. There's a current rising fourth year on campus who just had a baby a couple weeks ago. So it happens, and you get through it. Just takes a lot more effort and time management to be successful.
Wishing you the best of luck.
