Some background: my husband and I have a toddler, and I just started my first year in optometry school. School is going really well, I feel confident that I'm in the right program. My husband is super supportive, we have some family here, and a tight-knit community who would be there for us.

I'm starting to feel ready to have another child, but I'm just worried about timing while in school. It's late enough now that I probably can't plan a due date for the summer after first year (the only summer we are off). Should I wait until 4th year or even wait until after graduation? Or is it possible to have a baby while in 2nd year? Taking a year off for maternity leave is not something I'm considering.

I would recommend waiting until 4th year or graduating..... In my opinion 2nd year was tougher than first and third year you have to prepare for part 1 of boards. I wouldn't recommend taking a gap year in the middle of optometry school...

Thanks! After talking it over with my husband for several months, we are going to try and plan it so that I could deliver a baby over winter break 2nd year. If we don't conceive in the right window, we'll stop trying until we can time it for the summer. I guess we'll find out if our timing works out!
