Is anyone nervous about the Prelim Match at all? I went for 6 interviews and have informed all of them about my successful Ophtho Match. All, but one, have responded enthusisatically. I guess I am posting this because matching for the Prelim year is critical before starting Ophtho and I will be out of the country on Match day. I wish this wait would get over soon.
Any views?

I didn't think it was not. What else is the advantage of having an Early Match? I know of a few prelim programs that have called up their local ophthalmology program co-ordinators to find out who matched. If thats ok, whats wrong with informing them yourselves about your match ?
I agree that it woudnt seem fair to other prelim applicants who wont know their categorical match results till March. Any views ?

I would say yes....and it definitely won't hurt. Knowing that you already matched in ophtho(even if far away) may not help you, but it will not hurt if your prelim program knows they don't have to worry about what you will be doing after your prelim year. They also will not have to worry about you taking any time off to do interviews next year because you did not match.

🙂 I only went on 5 pre-lim interviews and I will only be ranking 4 of them. I'm a very tiny bit nervous as well. But I informed the places that I interviewed about my match into Ophthalmology and they all seemed to really like the fact that I had already matched. One Program Director even said "well, since you've been accepted into Ophtho I don't think there is much I am going to ask you." He seemed really enthusiastic and told me I had a pretty good chance of matching there (although, he did say he was not making any promises). So I think you should be fine.

It may not be tough to find A spot somewhere if you have to scramble....but multiple people that I know said it was the worst, most disorganized stressful day of their life...Try to avoid it if at all possible. Good luck

as with most aspects of residency, it depends upon the location of program you are trying to scrabmble into. many prelim spots in urban areas rank and match their top picks. i also think that prelim surgery tends to go more unfilled than prelim medicine and transitional because of hours worked, lifestyle, etc. so bottom line: if you are willing to go anywhere and do anything for a year, there will be spots available.
