1) Suppose I'm a PD at Sacred Heart for a prelim program that is not tied to any other program. In my ROL, can I specify that I want to match an applicant only if she matches to Seattle Grace for her advanced, but not if she matches to Princeton-Plainsboro for advanced? Once again, my prelim program is completely unlinked from any advanced prog in the NRMP.

2) Suppose I have 10 spots (for an adv and prelim prog), of which 5 are combined, and 5 are advanced only. Does this mean I as the PD make up 2 lists, one for the combo and one for the advanced side? And, I assume that I am free to rank the individuals within the 2 lists differently from each other?

Thanks!

1. I highly doubt they would have that option. 99.99% no.

2. PD's do have the option here of creating separate rank lists in this situation since the categorical and advanced programs are technically different programs with unique program codes. However, most places will just use the same rank list for both.

Not quite sure what you mean by #1. If I have a "stand alone" prelim program, I could "link" some of my prelim spots to an advanced program. Just as any two applicants in the NRMP match can "couples match" (including the "enemy match" -- where two students who hate each other use the couples match to be sure they end up at different programs), any two programs in the NRMP could link their matches.

So, theoretically, if Sacred Heart has a prelim program and makes a deal with Seattle Grace to only take their advanced matches, you can definitely do this in the NRMP match. I doubt this happens often, though.

huh?? how do I do that?

You have to enter couples match with the other person. But instead of ranking so that you match in the same place, you only list options where you match in different places. I doubt anyone has ever actually done this, but it is possible to do.

why didnt i know this of before?

I think it would take a lot of communication with your supposed worst enemy to successfully anti-couples match. Maybe turn you into new best friends.

why not just apply to different programs altogether... couples or not?

No one really does this. But it just points out that the couples match could theoretically be used like this. No idea why I mentioned it here, since it really has nothing to do with the original question.

Well I'm glad you did mention it... I'm using it for fellowship.

I ran into an enemy at an interview. no lie.
