Hi guys,

I'm a prelim surgery resident currently looking at applying to anesthesia in the upcoming match. I only applied surgery last year but I'm applying anesthesia this year based on my enjoyable experience during my 4th year elective as a student. I did not apply to anesthesia last year because I did my rotation too late and did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Now I'm currently doing an anesthesia elective in an attempt to gain an LOR, however my hospital does not have an anesthesia program.

Other info:
IMG
On J1 Visa
Step 1: 248
Step 2: 235
CS: pass 1st attempt

Currently gathered a list of R programs that accept J1 visas. Any advice or tips would be helpful and thoughts on my chances.

Thank you

Apply broad, probably will have to settle for mid-low tiered programs. Not sure how your J visa will play out, most likely makes the process harder. Reach out to your own school and see if anyone in the last few years have matched and/or for the names of those who are practicing in the US and reach out to them. Your own surgical PD? Also maybe prepared to redo your internship and apply for a categorical position.

No magic bullet. Just need to cover all your bases.

Good luck.

PS. Take step 3 and pass may help you out too.

Why do you think he/she would have to settle for mid to low tier? Because of the IMG status?

IMG status, drop on Step 2 score, and the no match the year before are all reasons to give pause to programs. Agree with the mid to low tier status. Should be able to match pending how you interview.

I am no expert on this, but I think the J1 visa is a negative as well. But someone definitely feel free to educate me otherwise.

Agree with all the above. Definitely possible to find a spot, especially at newly-opened programs.
