I've applied IM for 2012 residency. however, i've selected preliminary track in error/in addition to the categorical track. In ERAS i did not indicate anything in the submargin for prelim track about what sub-specialty i wish to pursue.

at this point, is it better for me to contact the programs i have applied prelim to and indicate that this was in error (in order to clarify my serious interest to the categorical) or should i just let it be?

i've been reading through the forum and i've come across some mixed suggestions. Some say to apply prelim and categorical to maximize chances of interview/residency. also, some programs have openly suggested applying to both of their offered tracks-esp for IMGs (which I am) ; nonetheless, i'm worried as i have also read that it may reflect poorly applying to prelim and categorical to same spot showing that i am not so serious about categorical....
help/suggestions please!!!???!!

It appears I may have misunderstood your question.

If you applied IN ERROR to a track, meaning that you didn't mean to apply at all and don't have any interest in doing it, then of course you should say it was an error.

If you applied to both prelim and categorical programs on purpose but applied to both a prelim and categorical program "in error" (i.e. you meant to only apply to one at each institution), then that's a different story. In that case, I'd leave it alone. You could do more damage by trying to fix it. As mentioned, many programs probably don't care about this at all, and simply see it as being prudent and cautious with applications.
