Does anyone know the answer to this? Is it possible for 2-4 programs to do a prelim year in general surgery instead of internal medicine? After long debate, I've chosen to apply to EM instead of surgery, but the thought of doing a medicine intern year in 2-4 programs is about as appealing as the plague. Anyone know a DEFINITIVE answer to this?

Gracias... 😎

Absolutely you can do a surgery internship. If you are going to do it then try to find a program that scuts you out as little as possible while giving you a fair exposure to critical care. Doing a year as a ward clerk/scut monkey is a waste of time and some surgical internships are like that.

Personally I always thought an intern year in IM with a heavy emphasis on inpatient/crit care was a better prep for EM but that bias probably comes from the fact that that is exactly what I did.
