In applying to preliminary programs can you only choose from Internal Medicine Prelim programs? Are there Ob/gyn prelims (or other Prelim year fields) that you can apply to before starting an Advanced Anesthesiology residency?
Thanks for any clarification!

There are also Transitional Year and Preliminary Surgery options

Thanks. I was aware of transitional year. So for prelims, there is surgery and medicine. Is that it? No Ob/gyn?

If you are interested in doing an OB/GYN prelim year, I would ask the ABA directly (http://wwww.theaba.org) I believe is the link.

One of my friends in my residency class did OB/GYN for 1.5 years, but I think his situation was unique in that he was categorical OB/GYN until he got into anesthesiology. So it should be doable, but to be safe and b/c I haven't heard of any prelim OB/GYN programs, I would ask the ABA directly.

You made me curious so I did a search on FREIDA for prelim OB/GYN programs -- it doesn't obviate the need to get a definitive answer as far as satisfying the anesthesiology requirement, but the programs are out there.

I believe ABA's program information booklet lays out the requirements for what is expected in a prelim year. So even if you had the ABA's blessing, you would have to make sure your program could accommodate those requirements.

Good luck.

Thanks for the links and the help guys. I'll look into it 🙂

I don't think OB/Gyn counts. There's someone in my program that was an OB attending for several years and is now an intern with me. It would be really difficult to get much ICU in OB/gyn.

I guess I'll be the one to say what we're all thinking:

Why in the hell would you want to do an OB/GYN internship?!

What he said.

I celebrated my last day in the ED because it should be (knock on wood) the last (work-related) pelvic exam I ever have to do...

I hear you on that. I JUST finished my last shift in the ED. I can't believe that at one time I actually was serious about going into it. Thank goodness though that I got EM over with early. Here's hoping no more vag bleeds and active abortions that I have to deal with directly.
