can I pre-match if I am a US grad, graduated last year (so not in thi coming graduating year)?

And how do you know when to say to PD that you will consider pre-matching? I went on an interview and like the program a lot. did my thank you note etc... The PD sent a personal letter reciprocating that the program will fit my interests and think that I will fit well in the program etc...mentioning my attributions in the letter making it personal. The program has pre-match resident before. So do I ask the PD straight or ask the residents who pre-matched into the program?

Thank you.

Yes, as an already-graduated US MD you can prematch.

Honestly, I'd simply ask the PD. SImply say that you're certain that they're your #1 program and you'd be happy to prematch, if they offer that. Worst case, they refuse to pre-match you -- then you won't know whether they 1) have decided not to prematch anyone; or 2) have decided not to prematch you because you're not a competitive enough candidate. If you can live with that, then ask politely. If not, then keep quiet and ride it out.

Hello..

I was wondering if I could get some clarification.
2 friends of mine have been given a prematch, 1 in the form of a contract and the second in the form of a letter of intent.

i realize a contract is pretty much a done deal, but what about a letter of intent. Is this common practice? The specialty is FM, if that makes a difference.

Thank you aProgDirector.

If the PD said to me "no" for pre-match, does that mean the program will not rank me on their list? I will still rank it high because I really like the program.

Nope. Some programs just don't like to do prematches or they may have already filled it by the time you ask about it. The program I matched at had already given their prematch spot away by the time I interviewed but they made it clear they wanted me. 🙂
