Hey, I currently attend SUNY geneseo but I was considering taking physics over the summer so I don't have to take it with orgo chem. I live on long island so I was considering taking it at either SUNY Stony Brook or SUNY Farmingdale. It'll be much easier and much close at farmingdale but Stony brook seems to have a much better reptuation as a 4 year university. Does it really matter where I take it? they are both 4 year schools and I only plan on taking physics at either of the two. Thanks a bunch guys!

I would speculate that it makes little difference. I took some of my pre-reqs at the local city college, and I don't think it significantly affected the outcome of my application process. It's all the same material and is covered on the MCAT, so there's no way you can get away with not knowing it.

My premed advisor always told me to stick with my own undergrad institution when taking summer classes. However, after going through this whole process, I've decided that premed advisors don't know what they are talking about 😛 Honestly, if it's more convenient for you to take a class closer to home, then just do it. It's only one class out of a gazillion classes. I took a few classes at my state school, and none of the med schools made a fuss.

Ya that's what my premed advisors said too. But they failed to realize that Rice does not offer any premed classes during the summer besides calculus

The only thing I am kind of worried about is not knowing the information well enough for the MCAT because A) i'm taking the mcats the summer after my junior year ( im a freshie now) and because B) farmingdale dosen't have a good reptuation or at least as good as stony brook. To what extent is physics in the mcats?

If you take it the summer after your junior year, you will be late applying. Take it the spring of your junior year.

Yeah, what they said. Above all else, do not apply late.

I plan on applying to medical schools during my sr year for matriculation in august 2009. I started premed late and will be starting my classes next semester(bio and chem sophomore yr)

Yes, we understand that but if you are shooting for 2009 matriculation, you need to take the April 2008 MCAT or else you will be considered a late applicant. If you can't get all of your pre-reqs in to meet that I would tell you to push back your intended matriculation by a year.
