Do you guys know of any books that explain the whole becoming-a-doctor process? I'm looking for a break down of the whole premed, med school admissions, med school, residency admissions, etc. process. I've looked around threads in here for some help but haven't really found what i've been looking for (however, I did find some interesting memoirs that i want to read... complications, final exam: a surgeons reflection on mortality, etc...).

This site has helped me an unbelievable amount and still does help me everyday, but i thought getting a book about all this wouldn't be a bad idea.

Thanks for any advice.👍

I haven't seen a book that explains the process... but its not too confusing.

- 4 years of college
- 2 years of "basic science" med school (lectures and studying)
- Step 1 exam (first board exam) summer after 2nd year
- 3rd year of med school (required clinical rotations)
- Apply to residency of choice in summer between 3rd and 4th year
- 4th year of med school (some required, some elective clinical rotations and traveling for residency interviews, as well as Step 2 sometime that fall, which is the second board exam)
- "Match day" in March of 4th year, where you find out what residency you will go to
- Residency for 3-7 years depending what you choose
- Either go into practice or do further training through one or more fellowships (subspecialty training)

Is that kinda what you were looking for?

Not to nit pick, but I believe that should say 4th year🙂

Except now it says 4nd year...

:smack: holy crap... not qualified for the interwebs

I'll just get back to pharmacology... although that obviously may not be a good idea right now haha.

Can we make a deal? If there is anything else still wrong with it, we will agree to just look the other way. Bc I'm not changing it again haha.

http://studentdoctor.net/sdn-admissions-guide/

It's also on Amazon.com.

I got it and while it doesn't have any earth shattering secrets not found on these forums, it certainly does organize and condense everything nicely.

It covers everything from "So you think you want to be a doctor, huh?" to application process (getting LORs, writing personal statement, etc.) to the medical school experience to residency training. It's a few years old (2007) but has lots of useful stats/data, too.

It's not magical, but it's worth the low price, especially if you buy it used. It's very down-to-earth and practical... it's written by medical students with input from admissions people--not by pre-med advisors.

Thanks! Sounds like exactly what i'm looking for.

Thanks to everyone else for the input as well! 😀

TIL you submit your residency wishlist before you do audition rotations. Is there a reason they need 9 months to do that? I'm sure the computer algorithm can churn through a few thousand med school graduates in a few milliseconds.
