premeds who "don't do well" with different personalities

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
he asked me to "be honest" and tell him what my grade was in the class as well as how I scored on the previous two tests.
This is gunner-code. When you hear it, run the other direction. He was only hoping to find out how you did so he could tell his parents how others struggled too.

When I asked him how he did he became really vague and kept saying how disappointed he was and how he is just going to have to memorize like crazy for the next two exams.
Again, gunner-code for I did terribly, but you'll never know what his grade was. And he's thinking "I'm going to be studying my ass off for the next two weeks." No social life whatsoever.

I asked him if he had ever considered a different approach to the material.
Don't bother trying to help guys like this. He's a gunner, and not interested in helping you if you struggled. In fact, he can't imagine why anyone would help someone else. You probably made him suspicious.

"I find you really annoying because you're offering to 'fix' my problem"
see comment above.

"In case you can't see, my body language is indicating that I'm trying to leave but you're keeping me here"
"Can't you see that I'm trying to keep you away?"
This is maybe an indication that he has Asperger's tendencies. He may have been taught stuff like body language, which is an area where Aspie's can't quite figure out. At the same time, most Aspie's do a terrible job sounding vague or avoiding a question.

LizzyM, Nice avatar. I can't figure out how to get a decent size avatar. Most of the time, mine are <1/2 inch square and need a microscope to see. The only reason why I knew it was you was this: If you can smell patients, it is a clinical experience.

If a classmate asks me my grades on a test I immediately try to break from the conversation. Whats the point in asking? I don't understand it.

It's the pre-med version of "how much can you bench?"

SDNers are diagnosing autism?

...😱

But there is M3 year, and M4 year. And I have never seen a more collegial group of people than the pathology attendings and residents at my place. The work may be with "things" but there is significant interaction with other members of the team and you do need to get along with a wide variety of people.

The OPs experience is a good reason why we do interviews. As unsuccessful as we are some times, I do think that we weed out some of the worst d-bags. And it is just one more chance to say:

"Pre-meds -- most of us will be going pro in something other than medicine."

I didn't realize I quoted LizzyM until I started writing this post. New avatar threw me off.

Anyway, I think this is a successful post. As always.

LizzyM's new avatar and her new declaration as "The Evil Queen of Numbers" somehow created great fear within me... 🙁:scared:🙁

My gunner radar doesn't work until I enter medical school. Associating with other premeds is a waste of time except on SDN

Good thing I didn't apply to any top schools and don't have to risk LizzyM identifying me 😀

👍 +1

Next time tell him to go pound sand.

The best response to any one of these gems might be, "OK, see ya' later." Then walk quickly and deliberately in the opposite direction. Don't go out of your way to say Hi in the future but don't be rude when passing close enough to smile or say hello. This guy's got emotional problems that are not your problems and you really can't be his friend.

No way. You're clearly smarter than this guy, so next time you get your test back, be sure to sit next to him and then casually "drop" it on the floor (if possible, alter the wind direction to blow your paper towards him) and then as you pick up your presumably higher score, make sure to brush the paper across his face while whispering "smellllllll it".

Or just pull a Will Hunting and slap your test on his desk in front of everyone and go, "How do you like dem apples??"

Sounds like a weird dude, pretty much. I probably would have laughed pretty hard at the weirdness of this conversation as I drove away.

I just hope be doesn't read SDN because then it would be really awkward lol

I'm not surprised they were able to get into medical school. A 30 min to hour long interview isn't going to tell anyone that this person doesn't play well with others. I never understood the rationale behind putting so much emphasis on an interview for judging people skills. Sure it tells you that they can clean up and adhere to basic hygiene but most people, even those that are terrible with people can carry a conversation or just answer questions thrown at them.

Some people are charming or funny at interviews which are great characteristics for doctors to have but it does little in weeding out people who can't play nice, Even a person that may seem charming at first glance can later on show their true side in either being arrogant, dishonest, grumpy, etc.

I don't know why more med schools don't ask for references from employers. Being good at your job has much to do with getting along with your co-workers or other people you work with as it does with work ethic. In addition, a friend of mine says doctors all need to take a mall job over Christmas because many have terrible people skills and need to be taught the basics of customer service.

Almost all jobs require a team effort. Instead of asking for yet another letter from a professor stating this person got an A in my class yada yada. An employer letter seems more relevant than another academic letter of reference stating the same thing. It would have most likely screened this person out.
You can't ask for employer references from a group of students who, by and large, I am sure, has never worked a day in his or her life.

I didn't even think of this, and the fact that he is a gunner kind of leads me into believing he probably is on here!! wow

Thanks everyone. It helps to put it into perspective.

I kind of want to either tell him next class that I thought he was really rude and should not just say everything that jumps into his head about others, or simply avoid him altogether but that would be immature so I guess I will just have to suck it up. Ugh.

This dude is insane. I would avoid him if I were you. He seems like one of those psychopaths that can't handle the pressure and will crack one day. You don't wanna be around when that happens, stay far away!

I don't even know what to say OP.

Just let him. He will realize that he might need to fix his personality.

If one person found his personality distasteful, but didn't bother telling him, he should wonder how many other people do too.

LOL this gives me so much hope because people like that are going to perform terribly in interviews and normal people like myself can steal their seats 🙂

Not really true. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that medical students are very good at acting like normal people. Everyone has their oddities - some are just better at masking them than others. Thinking that the interview process catches all or even most of the weirdos is wishful thinking. Hopefully your oddities aren't anything extremely strange.

I think employers are more limited in what they can say, and honestly, I wouldn't want to try to read the sort of letter most employers would be capable of writing.

I am actually curious to see how odd people mask their oddity. Like if I was omniscient, I'd want to watch the interviews of the people I know IRL who are either d-bags or oddballs. It'd be interesting.

The ones who aren't good at it never get to be medical students.

Of course, some medical schools may be better at weeding out odd balls. And some schools may value "team-work" over scores while others will take high scores and accept that some students with autism-spectrum disorders come with the territory.

I don't know, some sort of personality disorder? At any rate, I'd steer clear of that one. Hopefully he'll drop out and you won't have to see him again.

Did anyone consider he just had a bad day and wasn't open to taking opinions or tips at the time? We only got one side but we have two pages of people pouncing on this guy and trying to give him personality disorders.

maybe, but a normal human won't take his bad day out on a random chick that HE initiated the conversation with. That's called personality disorder, more specifically GSD (Gunner Superiority Disorder)

Some telltale signs and symptoms include:
being a gunner
sucking
tachycardia and lightheadedness upon seeing a higher test score than yours
outlandishly high test scores (46U?)
decreased rectal tone

risk factors include talking **** to Ashley, and being a member of SDN and hiding it from your friends. Oh, and smoking, because smoking is a risk factor for everything.

I've heard GSD affects 1 in 3 premeds everywhere. Talk to your doctor to see if treatment is right for you.

Sounds like both of you are over-analyzing the little exchange you shared.

I agree, I think there's a little bit of defensiveness on both sides here. I don't think anyone is in the wrong here, I just think having the SDN army helping out a real life social problem isn't the best idea b/c god only knows how SDN translates to real life.

Its no different than in real life, when a friend tells you about some lame jerk, and you comfort them and reassure that its not a big deal etc.

Aw thanks everyone. I feel a lot better after talking to everyone here 🙂
