I've seen so much hate with premeds in my classes, here in this thread, and now that I'm interviewing I hear that it's the same in med school. Why are we so hateful and bitter? Why are we so cut throat and enjoy others failures? I know we have to be competitive in order to reach the ultimate goal to practice as a care provider, but is it necessary to do it in such a hateful manner? I'm really getting sick of it. I've seen it so much. And now with interviewing as well. Why the HELL do you need to know my score and my gpa when we're already here interviewing?!? Seriously?! Are we this insecure about ourselves? And why brag about your stats? Sure, I get it. It's all a game. But some people are taking it to the extreme. We're all human beings. We're not animals feeding off of others flesh. Our main goal and purpose going into the health care field is to help people. Isn't it hypocritical of us to be acting this way?

It's a competitive field, cut-throat attitudes are inevitable.
 
Asking this is the same as asking 'why are we human?'
 
The entire process of becoming a doctor, from high school to residency, is brutal. Surround yourself with supportive people, find ways to step away from the process, and forgive those in medicine who make you feel small.

We are a group of people with enough insight to understand just how mixed up the world is. It is a crushing reality.


It's taking everything in me not to grow bitter already, and I've been promised that it only gets worse.
 
hmmm... haven't really felt much hate thru this whole process. i'm just an intern though. :shrug:

well, i guess my path kinda had something to do with it. was in a major with few premeds. went to a relatively laid back med school. now in a relatively laid back residency program.

sure there are the occasional cut throat gunners, but most are pretty decent... some/most complains a lot, yes, but good people in general.
 
They think being a giant douche bag is a prerequisite to med school.

let's just say i posted a picture after a 14 hour work day (running on 30 min of sleep), and i missed a small detail on that picture that made it questionable material for this forum.

You'd encounter the same thing in any competitive field, it's not restricted to pre-meds.
 
and the hate probably stem from their own insecurities about themselves and/or doubt about their chances... don't let it bother you too much.

Yeah my friends who are in business/law school and are now fiercely vying for coveted internship spots have classmates wayyyy worse than any pre-med/med student.
 
1. Maybe you're being too sensitive (sorry OP). I will admit, college was definitely a time of great pre-med insecurity for nearly all pre-meds I was acquainted with. There was some gunner, cut throat activity and general hater stink in the air. But I feel it's less pronounced at this stage in the game.

2. What schools are you interviewing at? I haven't had a single person ask me what my GPA or MCAT were. Then again, I have interviewed at a lot of notoriously collaborative and non-gunner schools.

Bottom line, we have all had different experiences and will continue to do so. Surround yourself with people that won't throw you under the bus and accept that med school is going to be competitive everywhere. Hopefully you can find a school where the competition is fueled mostly within yourself. Best wishes!

In all honesty, it wasn't that much better when I was an English major...

I think you'll find this with pretty much anything. Just focus on your classes and doing well and don't let the a-holes get under your skin.

Not everywhere is like that. My school is very difficult to get into and classes are tough, but the environment is very cooperative. I suppose people could get cut-throat at huge schools with tons of pre-meds, or at really competitive places for pre-meds like Cornell or Hopkins :shrug:. In any case, as others iterated, this is one of the most competitive fields to pursue, so it is inevitable that some will get that way. When they do get that way, just try to channel your inner Tobasscosauce 😉.

Sorry....reallllllly couldn't help it 😀 But honestly OP, in my opinion, this whole process, which is based on competition, fosters and attracts individuals which a competitive nature..a good number of those who make it through the filter all the way through medical school, use their competitiveness to get them through the rough patches. (I know I do sometimes) The difference if its something that you merely use for motivation, or if it affects your interactions with people and your personal life.
 
I feel like the arrogant, rude, and neurotic premeds at my school (there are just a few) have some of the worst personalities I know. I can't imagine any of them doing well on an interview.. not just for medical school.. an interview of any sort! 😛
 
Why the hate? Usually a lack of humility and/or confidence. Competition and respect are not mutually exclusive.
 
The school I go to is heading towards a model where they want the dorms to be broken up by major, i.e. all english majors live in one building, all economics majors in another, etc.

The idea of living in an entirely pre-med building makes me cringe. Hell on earth, my friends. Hell on earth!
 
Sounds cheesy and cliche, but I've learned that competing against myself rather than others gives me a different perspective and incredible drive.

Being supportive to others is good because when you feel down you won't be treated like a dick, it also gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside🙂

I think most people who debase others are competitive and need some self-assurance, whether they have good stats or not.

I agree this doesn't sound fun. Also - don't you spend enough time with people in your major already? Dorms are for meeting people who aren't like you, interested in different things, think different ways. Seems like the opposite direction of more integration/interdisciplinary study that a lot of schools are moving towards.
