Hello!
I am seeking some advice about a reapplication cycle after my first cycle didn’t go the way I had hoped. Since my first application cycle, I have made some big changes and want to make sure I am on the right track before I start my application in May. I originally applied with 75 clinical hours, but now have a job as a PCA/STNA/CNA in the NICU at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. I will put the stats that I have now and the stats that I project to have by the time I fill out my primary application in May down below.

Gender: Female
MCAT: 518
GPA: 3.96
Major: Biochemistry
Minor: Chemistry
Publications: 5 (no first author)
Research: 450 hours
Shadowing: 40 hours now (10 more scheduled)
Leadership role in a club that taught science to elementary students: 130 hours
Clinical Hours (working as a PCA): 500 hours now, expect to have 1500 hours when I apply
Volunteering: 270 hours now, 305 hours when I apply
Volunteer at a summer camp for children with disabilities: 125 hours
Clinical volunteering at a Children’s hospital: 40 hours now (will have 75 when I apply)
Volunteer at the storytime at my public library: 45
Volunteer in the pathology department and pharmacy department at a local hospital: 60 hours

I plan to apply as early as possible and fill out and submit my secondaries right away. In addition, I am about to train a service dog for a child with disabilities, but have not started yet, so I will have more volunteer hours from that experience. I want to make sure that I am going into this cycle as prepared as possible. I don’t want there to be any gaps in my application, and if there are any areas that do need improvement, I would like to know now so that I can take corrective action. Please let me know if there is anything else I should be doing.

My plan right now is to apply to around 30-40 schools this cycle. I reside in Ohio but went to the University of Illinois for undergrad, so I plan to apply to all Ohio schools and many of the schools in Illinois. I would really appreciate some recommendations on which schools to apply to the second time around based on my new stats. Additionally, any other advice on my application and about anything I could change/adapt would be greatly appreciated!

Can you be more specific what you did? Is it the service animal training?

Have you done any research on the Ohio schools and others you are considering?
Hello!

Here are the volunteer activities:
Volunteer at a summer camp for children with disabilities: 125 hours
Clinical volunteering at a Children’s hospital: 40 hours now (will have 75 when I apply)
Volunteer at the storytime at my public library: 45
Volunteer in the pathology department and pharmacy department at a local hospital: 60 hours

Right now, I have 270 volunteer hours, but some of these activities are ongoing, so I project I will have 305 hours by the time I apply. I haven't started training the dog yet, so it is not factored into the hours.

When I originally applied, I did extensive research into the Ohio schools and realized that I would have a fair shot because I am an Ohio resident. I also researched the other schools I applied to but had a hard time getting interviews, so I am hoping to get some suggestions based on the data I provided.

I suggest these schools with your stats:
NEOMED
Toledo
Wright State
Ohio State
Cincinnati
West Virginia
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State
Western Michigan
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
Illinois
Pittsburgh
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Hackensack
Hofstra
Einstein
Mount Sinai
New York Medical College
Albany
Rochester
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Dartmouth
Brown
Tufts
Boston University
Virginia Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
Wake Forest
USF Morsani
NOVA MD
You would benefit from 100+ hours of non clinical volunteering such as homeless shelter, food bank, etc. .

Congrats on all of your accomplishments! The best thing you can do for the Reapplication is to craft your narrative. Per the AAMC, applicants with a 518 MCAT and > 3,80 GPA still only have an 80% acceptance rate despite checking these boxes. Being able to describe specifically why you want to study medicine is as powerful as saying you are qualified, if not more.

When did you apply last cycle? Many applicants who submit secondaries after July do not get invited to interview solely due to the fact that volume of applicants is ever increasing. Apply as early as possible, and craft your narrative so that you can incorporate all of these experiences into concise essays that match the mission statements of each school you apply to.
