So after getting rejected from every single REU last year, I've made it my goal to get into one this year. I'm spending the next few months making sure I get into one and not have to face the disappointment of rejection. What are some things I should really focus on in terms of applying? Should I apply really early? What should be in a personal statement? I'm open to any advice.

Definitely apply early, make sure you have a good letter(s) of recommendation, keep your GPA up, and be able to convince the adcom's you are genuinely interested in research through your personal statement.

With letters of recommendation, try to have them written by a lab professor, or possibly a PI that you work/volunteer for.

Your personal statement is weighed very heavily by most programs so have it edited by as many people as you can, of course only those who you trust to know how to write well. You may even try sending it to your academic advisor.

REU's are a lot of fun, good luck!
