Hi guys,

Spending time with a retinal surgeon but haven't done my ophthalmology clerkship yet and am clueless as to what to expect or what his expectations may be 😕. Any advice would be much appreciated on ways I could prepare or what to expect.

Thanks!

Do as much as you can with any paperwork like h&ps and consent, mark eyes before surg, see patients in clinic and do as much as you can with them, or just observe if that is all they want, (and read diab ret, amd, mac hole, erm, rd, cme, cscr at least) - maybe help out with some publication if possible

I did a Retina rotation earlier this year. As a student, it's really tough to contribute anything meaningful (even if you've had an ophtho rotation) because it's technically challanging to exam the fundus.

In the OR, you'll just observe, but you can show your interest by reading about the case and asking pertinent questions. You could help out with the pre- and post-op care of the patients, too.

In clinic, you'll shadow a lot at the beginning. You can help out by screening the patients before the ophthalmologist exams them (VA, pressures, etc.). Look at the front of every patient's eyes under the slit-lamp so you get comfortable with it. Ask them to teach you how to use the lenses and the indirect. Depending on how good you get, they might let you have at it by the end of the rotation.

Learn to use the indirect ophthalmascope!!! I cannot tell you how much more meaningful your rotation with a retina specialist will be with this skill. You should be able to get a decent view of the central fundus with a bit of practice...I know I could after about a week of the rotation. Try to learn before you start the rotation!
