I have two prerequisite courses that I need to fulfill. I have already graduated and will go back to take these as a non-matriculating student. Is it okay to take these courses at a community college for DO schools?

YUPP! 🙂 Took all of my pre-reqs (including some retakes at a CC) and managed to get 5 interviews and 3 acceptances thus far! Nobody has said anything regarding them either 🙂 Like @AlteredScale said, ace them and you will be fine... well, if the rest of your application is up to par as well. 🙂 good luck!

I'm stupid, my advisor told me NOT to take pre-reqs at my CC because medical schools will see it as a red flag. Fast forward now into my junior year I'm already a transfer student whose taking CHM II /BIO I this semester. Now I have to wait another year until I can graduate.

So yeah take the pre-reqs at the CC. You'll be happy that you did, lol.

Sorry that happened to you bud. Many pre-med advisers don't know ****. Mine told me I would never get into medical school and should think about a different career path.

For a DO I agree with others yes CC's will work but I've found adcoms from many MD programs frown on them. Many community colleges have been dropping the word community from their name, so that is becoming less of an issue.

You'll find 100's of comments about poor adviser advice here. Even being a prof at my university I still had to speak with an adviser to get my courses approved and had to fight to retake physics 2 because they decided I didn't need it for med school admissions as I had a degree in engineering 25yrs ago. Some of the advisers are little more than hired grad students with a BA in humanities and have only read 1 sheet with the std pre-recs. I've found that it's helpful to attend the various open house or premed fairs and activities and talk to actual med school reps, but make sure the person you are talking with actually works in the med school admissions dept and not university marketing or another prog like nursing.

Wow, all of these horror stories in the SDN community really makes me appreciate my pre-med advisors. My advisors are very experienced in the medical school scene and have been doing it for over 20 years. They do committee letters and are very respected and trusted at our state medical school. They have friends that serve on multiple medical school committees so they let us know what they look for and what they frown on the most. It is such a nice feeling to have a team that is as dedicated at you are to get into medical school. My university averages a 70% acceptance rate with around 40-50 students applying each year. I know this doesn't help anyone out by saying this, and I am not trying to gloat, but I just feel like telling this story to hopefully bring some hope back to others who may have yet to see an adviser yet.

Good luck, all!

the vast majority of my pre reqs will be at cc. If a school or schools thinks this is not good enough then that's not a school I'd want to go to. Not everyone can afford uni.

What's the cost difference between uni and cc?

If you already have a bachelor's, then the Harvard Extension Postbacc would be a cheap option.

double for me. harvard ext would be about 3x cc cost for me.
