Hi everyone,

Trying to figure out where to take my prerequisites since I've already graduated. It comes down to either taking them at a nearby community college in person, or registering at a 4 year university and taking them online. Which do you guys think seems more competitive?

Also, anyone have experience with SUNY (State University of New York) Empire State? They have online organic chemistry and physics I could take. Also I would get in state tuition at like $250 a credit.

Thanks!

If the online class doesn't show up as "online" on your transcript, I don't think ADCOMs will ever know.

What about the associated labs? Does the online course have a face to face lab?

I would definitely do the CC option. You're paying the money, you might as well get the class time and while you could probably survive without it, face time is better in the long run. And don't forget, you will need LOR and it would be difficult if not impossible for an online prof to really gauge anything about you (if they even interact with you).

Well I emailed one DO school I like and she said online 4 yr would look better than CC. I don't understand why people dislike online so much - if the lectures are in video format, for example, the only difference is not being able to ask questions right away (you can still call and email).

Personally, love online. Problem is many admissions people don't take it seriously because the ability to cheat skyrockets. My bio class had quizzes online that were due every other week. People would gather together in packs of 8-9 people and take the quiz to get 100%.

Most schools put distance learning for online classes in the transcript

My school that I found does NOT put distance learning on it.

Is it anywhere near your vicinity? Otherwise it's obvious if you live in Oregon and take a class from University of Wyoming or something like that.

I'll have a couple online courses under my belt. Bio one, but we met for land three times(LONG DAYS) and I'll do genetics and biochem online too. You do what you need to do. Just get As. Where ate the orgo and physics labs?

I'm actually surprised they said this. Online classes are fine, I had many, but the reality is it turns you into a bit of an educational loaner. Since my first two years of school were primarily online I was never able to study in groups for the rest of undergrad. I had gotten so accustomed to just reading the book to grasp the concepts and in medical school I just don't think that's going to cut it.

I've taken many many online classes through our local community college system. I don't think it matters as long as you're pulling similar grades at a normal university. (I take my online classes in the summer)
