Hi everyone,

I saw that one prerequisite of dental school (the one that I'm trying to apply) requires 4hours of molecular biology. What is molecular biology? Is general genetics or cell biology considered molecular biology?

Course description: biochemistry and replication of nucleic acids; molecular genetics; protein biosynthesis; genetic code; regulation of expression of genetic information; biochemical evolution

I just took molecular biology this past semester. It was mainly about techniques on studying and sequencing DNA, the transcriptome, and the proteome and concepts about those three areas in general. So the class seems very useful if you want to go into some kind of research, though dental schools do like that class for some reason.

On the website it says a genetics course emphasizing molecular biology is acceptable if your school doesn't have a 4 credit molecular bio course.

What school are you at now?

You should ask them directly. Some schools are lenient on what fulfills certain categories of requirements, and some are not.

At my school, there was a 4-credit course called Cell and Molecular Biology, so I can't really tell you what another course name for it would be.

I'm still undergrad at the University of South Florida. And yes, I guess I can get the answer by directly asking them 🙂
