Hi,
I have to do a presentation for my fourth year elective to the department chair. I don't know anything except that it is supposed to be a topic in anesthesia and my appointment with him lasts 30 minutes. I only have today and a few evenings to prepare, and don't know that much about anesthesia in general yet. I don't understand what I can say to someone who will know more about every topic than I could find out. Any ideas on topics or approaches? Thanks.

I always thought that too when I was a resident/fellow, giving talks to "attendings"

You know what? We don't know everything. We know a lot, but no one knows "everything"

Pick a topic...goto pubmed...limit yourself to articles less than 3 years old...pull references from those articles if they are relavant....talk about them...who knows? you may teach him something....and certainly, you will teach yourself something.

They don't expect you to teach them something new, they just want to see how you present a topic. I assume this is a place you're doing an audition rotation for otherwise you prolly wouldn't be so concerned about it. Bottom line, they want to know how you think and how you present. Just pick something you find interesting and present it as best you can. Don't worry so much as to who your presenting it to than to how it comes across. Make it look very professional and be ready to answer any rebuttle questions they may have.

Perioperative beta blockade and its role in myocardial ischemia prevention. Great topic, alotta literature, easy reading, interesting, applicable, relevant.
