I have to give a presentation about a half hour in length regarding a topic in Ambulatory medicine. I was wondering if anyone had good ideas on what I should pick to give this topic.

Whatever you choose make sure it's esoteric enough that you can know at least as much as or more than your audience knows about the topic. That way you won't get too many questions, you'll refresh their memory, and you'll look like a superstar.

There was a really good AAFP review article a month or two ago on the approach to syncope in the outpatient setting that might provide a good framework for such a presentation.

Yeah, stay away from broad bread and butter topics, but I wouldn't go so esoteric that it's just gonna bore everyone. Topics like syncope, febrile UTIs in children (lotta recent controversy in this one that I actually think is rather interesting), prostate or breast cancer screening, diarrhea (or any other complaint) in HIV patients, would all be good.

Im going to disagree with everyone here...

You are a medical student. In ambulatory medicine. You will be presenting to other ambulatory medicine students? Maybe a a faculty evaluator. MAYBE some residents?

The purpose isn't to teach up. Its to teach people in your program. Its to teach at your level.

Pick things like "Blood Pressure control and goals" or "Oupatient diagnosis and management of Diabetes" or "Cholesterol" or "Screening." Ambulatory, most of all, wants you to know the bread and butter stuff. Share what you know with your colleagues.

As someone who has listened to a number of presentations on the wards, the WORST thing a medical student can do is try to impress everyone by going too far over their level. If you're talking about a PE (and are a medical student)... DVT, Virhcow's, well's, d-dimer, ct scan. Donezo.

Go bread and butter. Keep it simple. Keep it your level with a touch of "i actually read a journal article." You will not have an epiphany or discover something magical. Learn what you're supposed to learn and show everyone you learned it.
