Hi Everybody,

As the application day draws closer new questions emerge for those of us who are doing this the first time (at least for me it does 😳) Here are my one and a half questions:

We all know that there's essentially no clinical work done during an observership but there are other things one can do to optimize their experience like getting to know the charts, learning the jargon and so on. So what is the best way to present this on your ERAS application? For example, can you just write those simple details or would it appear too cheap to talk about things like that?

PS: I think you have guessed by now that I am an IMG 😛

Guys can you please give me some feedback on this? I think its a major question for most IMGs. Thanks.

You can certainly describe the details of your observership experience in your ERAS application. Not all observerships are identical, so it makes sense to explain what your duties / experience was.

Thanks aPD, as usual your contribution to this forum is invaluable.

The physicians I was working with let me interview, examine and presenting patients and they also occasionally ask me to write a draft patient note..Ofcourse they see and examine patients again after I present the cases. Is it legally ok to mention all these activities under an observership?

Whether it was legal of the physicians to let you do all that is questionable. But, that's on them. Yes, you should absolutely describe what your observership was all about. You can't get into any trouble for this.

Hmm interesting! Even in states like California where anything beyond the scope of a medical assistant is considered illegal it is OK to mention that you've had hands-on experience?
