What's the relative value of presenting research at a conference vs publishing, with regard to how they are valued by residency programs? Is one more difficult to do than the other?
Can't speak for how residencies view it, but without a doubt peer review for publication is much more rigorous than conference review for presentation.
From highest regarded to lowest:
Paper published in PubMed > Oral presentation you presented at a conference > Poster presentation you presented at a conference > Abstract (published) that you were a part of but did not present > Abstract (not published) that you were a part of but did not present > Any research experience > No research experience.
There's a lot of value to going to national meetings if you have the opportunities to meet people in your field, even if you don't have something concrete to present.
