I know there are other posts regarding the prestige of your undergrad school and how it might affect your chances of getting into dental school. But my situation is somewhat different. Currently I'm a sophomore at NYU (3.4 overall, 3.1 science, I totally messed up my first semester but am in the process of bringing my grades up!). But due to family matters, it appears that I may have to consider transferring to a state university (like Stony Brook?) because the tuition is significantly lower there. I'm not trying to say that either one is good or bad, but there is the general conception that private universities are more prestigious than state universities. Let's say I really DO have to transfer to Stony Brook. Will dental schools consider this "prestige factor"? Or will it not make too much of a difference, if I continue to make progress, get good grades and score well on the DAT...and possibly explained what happened, when writing my personal statement?

Thanks in advance!

Shouldn't make a difference. Most schools, if not all, know Stony Brook to be a solid state school. I would not worry about this.

Don't even think twice. You were probably better off just going to Stony Brook right from the get-go would've saved yourself even more money.

stony brook is a great school!

I have to tell you, I graduated Stony Brook.... and it is quickly becoming known as a very strong science university. Not to say that they are in other schools, but the pre-rec science courses are anything but bird courses. To scale the difficulty of the science courses in Stony...I have a friend with a 40 on the MCATs and I know a few guys in the upper 30s and most of them got an A- in at least one of the two Biochem semesters. You could definitely choose a worse school.

doesn't matter that much and even if it did, stony brook is a good school!
