Prestige of Different Medical Practices

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ortho are the jocks of medicine

Yeah, and while they get made fun of for being dumb, it's pretty brilliant that their residency is the same length as gen surg and their "attending" salary is double.

Playing dumb, as long as you're actually playing, can get you a lot in this world.

who cares dudes, if you want prestige and money, go into finance or something else that will give you more of that with less work

There is no prestige in finance. Unless of course you somehow manage to become a CFO or other executive at a fortune 500 company. Honestly, your chances of becoming a doctor is a lot higher than that ever happening - regardless of how hard you try.

Oh and by the way, most of my friends that graduated with finance degrees over 10 years ago barely make over 90K with 10+ years post college. So that also leads me to believe that your chances of making more money as a specialist doctor is also higher.

I know this has been said a million times, but I'll say it again. There is no job more consistently lucrative than medicine. I know many people my age, and some older, that have finance major / MBAs. None make more than 150K and none work less than 60 hours a week. Many are unemployed. That being said, I would still go into med if it paid minimum wage and I hope that you would to. However, at this point in time it does not.

I completely agree, most of the posters on sdn seem to think that going into one of the business fields is a sure path to riches. I am older than the traditional sdn poster (34) and have watched a lot of my friends go into, and out of, the business fields over the years. I will say this - the majority of them worked long long hours for very little pay, your 150K estimate is very generous as the majority will never get anywhere near that.

Yea, I feel bad for those poor MBAs who only make 140K. They must eat government cheese for dinner every night.

His 140-150K estimate was a little much. Most don't get near that, my brother happens to be an accountant with a BS in Economics and Accounting, an MBA, and he's a CPA with approx 10 years of experience that includes the Big Four (Deloitte). We are also in the Northern VA/ Wash DC Area, which by all accounts has been shown to have one of the strongest job markets in the country. He has never made more than 80K and has been unemployed now for the past 8 months. He say's that if he doesn't find a job soon he's probably going to try his hand as a tax attorney and go to law school. He's been studying for the LSAT over the past 2 months now, so it looks as if thats the route he's going to go.

So government cheese or in my bro's case, unemployment checks, is not as far fetched as you think it might be in this economy.

There are a lot of unemployed attorneys out there as well. Not sure that's the path I'd go.

Yeah I know, I think he's actually wanted to do law for quite a long time. His original plan in college was to do law, but for some reason or another he ended up working as an accountant and never did the law thing. I think he's now finally able to justify going back to school since he can't find work. He also thinks that he'll have a unique nitch as a tax attorney on the account that he's a CPA with experience.

He will have a niche. Hope he can get some good internships during his first two years. That's of critical importance.

There's a pre-med at my school that walks around the place boasting his neuro(add in lots of fancy words) logy major, applying only to Harvard and Hopkins, and becoming a neurosurgeon. This doesn't contribute anything to the thread.

It contributes teh lulz. Perfectly valid addition to silly thread.

These kind of comments never get less funny.

There are no gods in the hospital. It takes a team to save a patient.

Although, neurosurgeons do tend to have god complexes, so you may fit right in there.

Well you know what the difference is between God and a doctor, right?

God doesn't think He's a doctor. :meanie:

Oh, and personal satisfaction >>>>>>>>>>>>>> "prestige"
