What are the pretest tests? What are the shelf exams?

Are there tests that you can take to test yourself on MS1 material retention?

The PreTest you're probably referring to is a series of question books you can buy for review/to study called PreTest *insert subject here*.

Some medical schools use shelf exams as final exams. These are subject exams put out by the NBME. http://www.nbme.org/PDF/NBME2003SubjExams.pdf

I'm not a big fan of pretests.
