An HIV-positive patient undergoes periodic CD4 counts. During his most recent screening, his CD4 count is 197 cells/mm3. His physician prescribes pneumocystis carinii pneumonia prophylaxis. Which of the following does this prescription represent?

  • A Tertiary prevention
  • B Treatment of active disease
  • C Treatment of primary disease
  • D Secondary prevention
  • E Primary prevention

Hi, I would go with A or D.

If you give it to prevent, PCP from occurring for the first time (= primary prophylaxis) → Decreases incidence.
If you give it to prevent recurrence (= secondary prophylaxis or maintenance therapy) → Decrease prevalence.

I dont even know what this prevention science is lol. Is it something new that they added in recent years?
I d say D

Why not E ?
Is it not a prophylaxis i.e. a prevention ?

Would this be correct:
- It is primary prev for Pneumo Carinii
- But tertiary for AIDS
?
I agree it would be primary prevention for PCP. They don't have it yet.
Tertiary for AIDS would be HAART
