Does anyone know where I could find a list of procedures and the average price for performing them? I think its the one thing I never looked into. LIke how much is a filling or a partial bridge or even a root canal? If anyone knows or could give me a link I would appreciate it. Thanks.

This won't help you now, but remember it when you start practicing in a few years. There's software called the NDAS Pricing Program...they put out a new version every year and it tells you the 40th-90th percentiles for procedure prices in your area of the country. Very helpful for setting and updating fees.

there is an article out in the latest issue of 'dental economics' on 2006 fee schedules. it gives the averages for various fee "brackets," ie. high end, medium, low etc, as well as the national averages for procedures. its pretty in depth.

You'll figure it all out when you are IN dental school, seeing as you'll be treating patients and developing tx. plans. After 2-3 months it'll be second nature to you.

But the prices that dental schools charge for procedures are heavily discounted...patients are basically just paying for the costs to keep the clinic open. The fees that a general dentist in private practice would charge are significantly higher.

It gets tricky too because offices that are contracted with different insurance companies offer the same treatments at diff rates, depending on the company and the contract. For example, a office's cost for a crown for people without insurance could be 1200$, but for people with delta dental 900 and cigna hmo 500. What is a partial bridge?

it not that I want to know how to charge ppl or anything i just want to know what it is. I never bothered looking it up or asking a dentist and just wanted to know what a simple procedure would cost. I am sure i will learn in dental school. maybe i will call a place and figure it out. thanks.

In dental school, procedures are about 50% less than the real world.
A filling at Nyu depends on the number of surfaces. It can range from 70-125 dollars. A crown is 450-500. A partial bridge (I'm not sure what you mean by this)?? A bridge is 450 per unit. A removable cast partial denture is 500, per arch. A complete denture is 450, per arch. A root canal depends on the number of roots. 400-500 I believe. So in real life, everything is about double this.

At the office I work at, (I have put together treatment plans while working front office) prices vary. We are located in a so-so area in town and like stated before it can depend on many things. Insurance rates also vary from company to company. In my office we offer a "discount plan" for those with no insurance and a crown will cost you about 500. A bridge is 500 a unit. Fillings depend on how many surfaces and whether it's amalgam or composite which can run you from 45 to 190 a filling. Something like dentures can be about 700. I also just found out that a dentist can update their fees once a year for the insurance contracted rates.....(my boss is in the process of updating his fees) 🙂
