So I was talking to some classmates about prices of materials at our school dental store. It seems that dentoform teeth are $2 a piece (yikes!) and burs are somewhere around $1.50. What do you guys pay? I was thinking of asking the dentist I shadowed if I can order burs thru him, but I don't know if it would be any cheaper. Anyone buy materials (especially teeth) from someplace other than their school? I was given a large bag of teeth, but if I practice as much as I would like to I think I will get thru the bag well before the year is over. Thanks!

$1.77 for kilgore ivorine teeth
$1 for burs (comes in packs of 10)
$5 for a diamonds

Prices are virtually always MUCH cheaper at the student store so enjoy it while you can. There are a few new quality items I've found cheaper outside...

1. Midwest bur 75 cents each in 100 bulk from Italy.
2. Solarcam intraoral camera $59 bucks from ebay.
3. Textbooks from England/Malaysia 70% off.
4. Hi-speed swivel handpiece $40 from ebay.

$2 for teeth at UIC.

we get all the burs and files we want for FREE! I have classmates that use entire blocks of brand new diamonds everyday for fixed.

of course our tuition is extremely high for a public school...

It's not possible to use up entire blocks of diamond for daily crown preps. You sure your classmate's not hogging them or selling them on ebay?

they're likely burning them up fast by not using any water spray while prepping. people practicing for nerb did that a lot.

free. hoooray private school! hahaha at least 1 benefit. at Midwestern; free ivorine teeth, free burs, free materials.

now that is a good deal.

I thought we were getting ripped off here when they charge us 2 bucks for teeth, makes me feel better knowing everyone else (...almost everyone else) has to fork over untold amounts of money to practice.

hahaha i feel like i would practice a LOT less if i had to pay for ivorine teeth. lol don't worry, i figure my tuution covers it.

If you don't want to buy teeth, collect teeth from around, and mount real teeth inside the typodont. You can practice on real teeth. It takes about 5 cents worth of putty to mount each one.

If you tend to go through many burs, buy course grit burs (green stripe) or cross cut carbides (the teeth give them better cutting power, but you can't leave them for prolonged periods against teeth without water).

are you talking about diamonds?....sometimes i dont use water spray and i have never had a diamond bur burned up on me, only carbide.

yes, i'm talking about diamonds. they burn up very quickly on typodont teeth (well, columbia ones, anyway - i have no experience with the kilgore dentech) when used without water spray.

Scotty I still have a bunch o' teeth from last yr, I'll sell 'em to ya cheap! Haha. …unless the store actually IS going to do a buyback at the end of the yr like they've been talking about…

Have you tried out the interproximal guards? Friggin' $2 apiece!

That's it, I'm transferring to Midwestern. 😎

We aren't allowed to use them on practicals so I haven't checked them out yet. We had a class 2 restoration practical today and couldn't use finishing strips because we haven't gone over them in class! She's pretty strict about that stuff. Are those guards the matrix bands with the little curly Q's on the end so you don't need a retainer? I've seen Dr. Dishman using fender wedges...they look pretty cool as well. If I'm hard up on teeth I may come bug you! 🙂

She is strict indeed! I didn't get any interproximal guards till this yr. You can totally get by without 'em, but they're kinda nice to use for practicals.
