Regarding the primary AMCAS application, i have been told it 'opens may 1st' but you cant submit till june 1st. What does this mean? when i go to the amcas site, i can use my mcat registration username and password and it lets me start working in the primary (ie background info, etc). It has like 8 or so categories, and even has my official mcat score.

Is this techincally for the 2009 application? or can i start filling it out now since i know ill be really busy in may, and hope to submit early? I dont want to do all the work and then have it deleted come may 1st. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks a lot everyone!😕

It opens on May 5th this year. And yes, the one you can get into is the 2009 one. Anything you put in there, won't be there on the 2010 application. I'd suggest typing all your descriptions out in Word or something and then copying and pasting when it actually does open if you will be too busy during May.

so lemme get this straight....

application opens may 5th
you can submit june 1st?
amcas sends everyone's stuff out end of june?

is that how it works?

basically joker thats how it works. June 23rd or something like that is when amces officially sends everything off.

I'm pretty sure you can submit when it opens (so you can get the verification over with)... though it won't be sent out till 6/1 even if it's verified before then...

^by "sent out by june 1" do you mean that amcas sends the application out to med schools on june 1 or that amcas will "officially" receive your submitted application june 1st?

I mean that AMCAS sends out the first batch of verified applications on June 1. It was June 1 last year, so I'm assuming it's the same this year.

^ah ****. that sux....

Why does that suck? The app cycle for THIS year isnt even over until July-August, the adcoms can only focus on one thing at a time if they want to do a good job.

Edit: The guy you quoted has a typo, he meant July 1. AMCAS wont send anything until July.

oops, I think chessknt is right... it's july 1st. Feels like I submitted the app years ago.

I agree - it's a good thing!

I may sound so slow that you wonder what I'm doing on a med school forum in the first place, but nonetheless please hold my hand and walk me through this:

I put all my info into AMCAS already (except MCAT score).
Does what you said mean that I've entered it into the wrong application, seeing as how I aim to matriculate in 2010?
If so, I assume that means I Must re-do the whole thing when it opens next month in May?

I understood the process differently.

Yeah, it sucks. I'd suggest copying and pasting all the stuff you've typed in into a Word document and then transferring it. For the courses and stuff, I'd print out the application (there's a button on the right), and just enter them from there. It'd be faster.

I did the same damn thing last year. :smack:

As far as the time line goes, I submitted my app on June 4 last year and I was processed by June 20. I received my first secondary from MCW on July 3, I got my second on Aug. 3, and my third on Aug. 13. I got my last app on September 3. My first interview was at the last school I received a secondary from and occurred on September 18. My last interview was on Dec. 12.

When can we send our official transcripts into AMCAS? After the application opens and we get our ID # from AMCAS, we can then send our official transcripts in? If that is the case, we can send them in as early as May 5th to get verified, correct?

Bless you, and thank you for holding my hand on this. You have just saved me several hours on May 5 of frustration preceded by a thorough bashing of my head against the wall.

My advice is even before May, make sure you have your personal statement perfected and a list of activities/organizations/awards/jobs/research positions, etc. that you've been involved in. Along with all those activities, have a brief summary of what it entailed. The application itself won't take very long if you've got all this info prepared ahead of time. Best of luck to all of you this upcoming cycle! 🙂

Well s***, son. I already spent the 45+ minutes putting in all of my coursework...

Right. If you haven't started your PS yet, you should get on it.

Thats the way i understand it. Once it opens may 5th you can enter in your classes, get transcript request forms, then go to your schools registrar office or whoever takes care of that stuff, and youre done. Hopefully you dont have to drive 3-4 hours like me to an old CC to get transcripts though....-_-

I was wondering about this also. Transcripts can be sent in after classes are entered, but before June 1?

I'm pretty sure I read the earliest they will accept transcripts is mid-May. the application opens May 5th or whenever so you can start filling it out, but i'm almost positive they don't ACCEPT transcripts any earlier than May 14th-ish.

Doh! I gotta wait till 6/11 for my spring grades to come out in my transcript. You don't think this will matter too much since AMCAS doesn't get sent out to schools until 6/23 or so, right?

I have to do this too. I'm debating whether or not to just submit with only Fall grades on there.

This issue comes up every year. My recommendation--just wait for your spring grades if you are a junior. Even if they dont really change your GPA, at least it doesnt look like you are trying to hide something, and the loss of time wont amount to anything as long as everything else on your app is in line. My school sent my transcripts June 23, I was verified July 18, and I was complete at nearly all of my schools right along with the June submitters because I had my secondary answers typed out before I got the secondaries-->instant secondary turnaround.

That's probably what I'll do. Is it possible to submit before transcripts are ready? I know nothing will get sent, but I'm just curious as I may not have access to a computer for a while, and I just can have my school send transcripts when they become available.

Also, for anyone who used the AMCAS LoR service last year, when can these be sent to AMCAS?

I also have a question regarding the AMCAS LoR service. Now that so many schools are using this service, do we need to get the letters to AMCAS before the verification process? Or is it still okay to submit the application first for verfication, then send in the LoRs, and then AMCAS will add them to your application?

Hey guys,

Something isn't clear to me in all this. Is there an advantage to filling out AMCAS quickly, or does AMCAS send everything for every applicant in July?

I'm working on a packet with my premedical committee, which I plan to have completed and submitted on May 18th.

Should I begin working on AMCAS before the committee writes my letter?
