Hi,
I'm starting to look into moving to Canada after finishing my Family Medicine Residency in the U.S (or maybe a few years after practicing here). A friend of mine mentioned that a physician that has licensure in the US can practice in Toronto without going through as many hoops as in other provinces. Can anyone comment on that? Also, what is a typical FM practice like? Are they usually gov-owned? How many pts does a typical doc see in a day? Realistic starting salary (I have enormous school loans)? Does the health care set up really dictate the kinds of pts docs see (i.e. here, I see a lot of FM docs that choose to not really see elderly or pediatrics or whatever they have a personal preference to avoid)? Do typical FM docs have to do prenatal care or OB? My ideal practice would be working with a few other doctors, doing only outpatient medicine, no OB, a good amt of peds, elderly is fine, however I would like more of a women/children's type practice environment. Is this realistic? I think it would be realistic here (USA) as I see doctors who skew their practice towards particular interests (geri, sports med, etc). I would really like to live in Canada though (am a US citizen currently).
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
